Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Mitch Richmond scored eight of his 16 points in the fourth quarter as the Washington Wizards held on for an 84-73 victory over the Orlando Magic, who lost leading scorer Nick Anderson to a hamstring injury.

Juwan Howard scored 20 points to lead the Wizards, who never trailed and climbed above .500 (8-7) at home. Washington held Orlando to its second-lowest total this year.

Anderson, who averages 16.5 points per game, suffered a strained left hamstring midway through the second quarter and did not return. He scored 26 points in a 96-85 win over the Wizards on February 17 but did not score tonight.

Without Anderson, Orlando's offense struggled. The Magic tried to rally with a lineup of mostly reserves in the fourth quarter but the strategy backfired as they went nearly the final three minutes without a basket.

"It was a very gutty effort from us," Richmond said. "We were able to hold them off in the end. We've been playing good basketball, we have just come up short a couple of times. Tonight finally paid off."

Richmond also reached a milestone, becoming the 41st player in NBA history to eclipse 18,000 points with a basket in the opening minute.

"To reach something like that with the career that I have, I hope to get many more," he said.

Darrell Armstrong scored 15 points and Horace Grant added 14 and nine rebounds for the Magic, who had won four of their last five games. Orlando (22-10) still leads the Atlantic Division by one game over Miami (19-9).

Star guard Penny Hardaway scored 11 points but sat for most of the fourth quarter, when Orlando rallied.

"We kept fighting, we just couldn't make the baskets in the end," Magic coach Chuck Daly said. "We struggled to score. Penny has got to take over more."

"It doesn't surprise me what Coach Daly does," Hardaway said. "You just have to go with the flow to survive."

Using a lineup of at least three reserves, Orlando pulled within 74-70 on a jumper by B.J. Armstrong with 2:57 left. But that was their last basket.

Richmond made two free throws and a jumper, giving Washington a 78-70 lead with 2:06 to play. Dominique Wilkins made 1-of-2 from the line, but Rod Strickland hit a jumper and Howard found Ben Wallace with a no-look pass for a dunk and an 82-71 bulge with 1:05 to go.

"We couldn't get over the hump," Hardaway said. "When Nick went down, we lost a scorer. In the fourth, that showed."

Washington's Calbert Cheaney hit a jumper and Orlando rookie Michael Doleac made two free throws to complete the scoring.

"Defense won this ballgame," Howard said. "They are a tough team. Tonight, we produced in all four quarters. That was the difference, finding cracks in their defense (in the fourth quarter). We kept our composure."

Terry Davis scored 12 points, Strickland added 11 and Cheaney 10 for the Wizards, who shot 45 percent (32-of-71) from the field and forced 21 turnovers, which they converted into 28 points. Stricklnad had nine assists and Howard added seven, a season high.

"It's a big win for us," Davis said. "If nothing else, this gives us confidence."

Isaac Austin scored 10 points for the Magic, who shot just 37 percent (26-of-71) and held a 42-30 rebounding edge.

Davis scored eight points and Howard six in the first quarter as Washington opened a 26-18 lead.

Anderson collided with Richmond while he was going for a steal with 6:37 left in the second quarter. He screamed in pain and was on the court for several minutes before being helped off. A halftime evaluation determined the hamstring injury and he is listed as day-to-day.

The Magic closed to 34-32 on two free throws by Derek Strong with 6:01 left in the first half. But Howard hit a jumper and Tim Legler drilled a 3-pointer, rebuilding Washington's lead to seven points.

The Wizards led 43-40 at halftime and extended to 68-56 behind six third-quarter points from Howard.
