Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Once they took superstar guard Gary Payton out of the game, the Seattle SuperSonics had no problem with the Houston Rockets.

Reserve point guard John Crotty came on for Payton and sparked a fourth-quarter surge that gave the SuperSonics a 101-84 victory over the Rockets, who have cooled off again.

Payton had his usual outstanding game with 30 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals. He played every minute until taking a breather early in the fourth quarter.

The perennial All-Star was replaced by Crotty, a seven-year veteran signed by Seattle after he was cut by Portland last month. The journeyman responded by matching his career high with 19 points. He scored 14 in the fourth quarter, including 10 in the first 4 1/2 minutes, as Seattle took control.

"It was a good stretch run for me," Crotty said. "You know its tough when you come in with experienced guys but everybody has been great and really supportive."

"He's a good player," said Sonics coach Paul Westphal. "We've been seeing that when we've had practice. He knows how to handle himself so he just needs a chance."

Detlef Schrempf had 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for Seattle, which shot 10-of-19 from 3-point range. The Sonics snapped a three-game losing streak that had dropped them under .500 for the first time since the 1991-92 season.

Hakeem Olajuwon scored 18 points and Charles Barkley grabbed 19 rebounds for Houston, which shot only 5-of-27 from behind the arc. The Rockets have lost two in a row following a nine-game winning streak and completed a 3-2 road trip.

Houston erased a 17-point third-quarter deficit but fell apart in the final period, allowing 36 points. Barkley and Scottie Pippen were scoreless in the fourth quarter, both finishing with nine points.

Payton set an early tone by looking for his shot and finished 12-of-27 from the field. Crotty made 8-of-10 shots, many of them driving layups through Houston's interior defense.

"I've been saying we've been playing hard on the road trip even though we were only 1-4," Westphal added. "We continued that and we started to make some shots tonight and I think that was the big difference."

Crotty opened the final period with a layup and rookie Jelani McCoy followed with a hook for a 69-61 lead. Houston closed to five points before another driving layup by Crotty capped his 10-point outburst and gave Seattle a 79-72 advantage with 7:27 to play.

A 3-pointer by Hersey Hawkins, who scored 13 points and made all three of his long-range shots, opened the lead to 86-76 with 4:02 remaining. The Sonics continued to widen the advantage until the final buzzer.

Seattle shot 46 perent (38-of-83) and held Houston to 40 percent (31-of-77). Sam Mack scored 15 points, rookie Cuttino Mobley added 13 and Brent Price 12 for the Rockets.

Payton scored nine points and Hawkins had eight in the first quarter as the Sonics bolted to a 28-19 lead. Payton continued to fire away in the second period, adding 10 points as Seattle extended its lead to 51-36 at halftime.

"Gary is the best point guard in the world," Barkley said. "He's a great player and he just dominated the first half. Give them credit. They played well and we played terribly today."

Two free throws by Aaron Williams opened the third quarter and gave the Sonics their largest lead. But Seattle went cold and Mobley got hot, scoring nine points in a 21-5 burst. Pippen capped the run when he took a whip pass from Mobley and dunked to give Houston a 59-58 lead with 4:16 remaining.

A 3-pointer by Schrempf allowed the Sonics to regroup and began a 7-0 spurt. Payton and Dale Ellis added baskets for a 65-61 lead.
