Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Grant Long's 15-footer with 2.6 seconds to play gave the Atlanta Hawks an 85-83 victory over the Charlotte Hornets, who have lost four straight games.

Hawks center Dikembe Mutombo missed two free throws with 1:12 left and was called for goaltending against Eddie Jones with 16 seconds to go, allowing the Hornets to tie it at 83-83.

Atlanta did not call timeout and Long set a high pick for point guard Mookie Blaylock. As the Hornets swarmed Blaylock, Long floated to the left corner, took a pass and knocked down the open shot.

"Beautiful. Any time it goes in, it's beautiful," Long said. "It was a simple pick-and-roll and the two defenders went with the ball. He made a tremendous pass to me in the corner and the guy who was rolling -- I think it was Eldridge Recasner -- didn't get there in time. I think I had a very good look at the basket."

"It's a situation we run and Grant's made that shot," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "That's his shot from the corner. He makes that shot a lot. What we want to do is take the clock down as far as we could because the score was tied and we didn't want to give them another chance. We executed the screen-and-roll situation really well and Grant was open."

Jones had a good look but fired long on a 3-pointer at the horn, sending Charlotte to their sixth straight regular-season loss to Atlanta. The Hornets have not won in the series since April 2, 1997, although they did eliminate the Hawks in four games in the first round of last year's playoffs.

"I knew the ball was coming to me," Jones said. "We set up the play to give me the basketball and I slipped. That's what happened. I slipped as soon as I caught it and that kind of threw my balance off. The shot still looked good for a minute."

Long scored half of his 10 points in a second-half surge led by the bench that gave Atlanta control. The Hawks held a 41-19 edge in bench scoring.

"Our bench has been very good this season," Long said. "You know we wanted to come out and provide energy. I think this afternoon we came out and gave a lot of offense and essentially that got us back into the game."

Alan Henderson scored 18 points and Tyrone Corbin contributed 15 off the bench for Atlanta, which has won two in a row without leading scorer Steve Smith, sidelined with a sprained left knee.

Jones scored 16 points on just 5-of-19 shooting and the starting frontcourt of Derrick Coleman, Elden Campbell and Chucky Brown added 14 apiece for the Hornets. Coleman grabbed 18 rebounds.

"We played hard and had a good look at the end," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "We're playing a good team. That's all we can ask, that the guys play hard and give me their best. It just wasn't good enough."

A jumper by David Wesley gave Charlotte its largest lead at 54-46 with 6:23 left in the third period before Atlanta's bench took charge. It closed the quarter with a 17-8 burst and opened the final period with nine of the first 11 points.

Corbin made two 3-pointers, rookie Roshown McLeod added six points and Long had five in the overall 26-10 surge, which gave Atlanta its largest lead at 72-64 with 8:12 left.

The Hornets responded with a 9-2 burst featuring five points by former Hawk Eldridge Recasner. A basket by Jones with 5:08 left cut the deficit to one. Blaylock following with a jumper as he became the 216th NBA player to surpass 10,000 career points.

"I was surprised," Blaylock said. "I didn't know I was close and even had it. I was trying to get a win. That's what I was looking for. When you get a win, it's great. But when you lose and get something like that, it's not fun. Getting the win tonight and getting that milestone was a great feeling."

Blaylock finished with 14 points, McLeod added 11 and Mutombo had 10 rebounds and five blocks for the Hawks, who shot 44 percent (32-of-73) from the field and held a 41-38 edge on the glass. Atlanta made just 17-of-34 free throws.

"We missed a ton of free throws and if we make them, this game is not close," Wilkens said. "We have to make our free throws. The guys who are missing them are pretty good free-throw shooters."

Recasner scored 11 points for the Hornets, who shot 42 percent (30-of-72) and made 20-of-24 from the line.

A free throw by McLeod gave Atlanta a 31-26 lead with 7:28 to play in the second quarter before Recasner scored six points in a 15-4 surge as Charlotte opened a 41-37 edge with 1:33 left. The Hornets led 46-41 at halftime.
