Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Chauncey Billups banked in a running shot in the lane with 3.9 seconds remaining, giving the Denver Nuggets an 82-80 triumph over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Billups took an inbounds pass at mid-court and drove into the lane on Sherman Douglas. Billups floated a shot from just inside the foul line and banked it home, putting the Nuggets ahead.

Los Angeles had a chance to force overtime, but Lamond Murray's 20-footer from the left wing hit the side of the backboard as time expired.

The win tied a franchise record for least number of points in a victory. The Nuggets also scored 82 points in a victory over the Boston Celtics on November 15, 1996.

Billups finished with 16 points and continues what has been an outstanding stretch, averaging 26 points in his last three games.

"I'm a very confident player and if it comes down to the end and I have a chance to win it, I'm going to try to," Billups said. "Tonight, I didn't play well. Even if I missed some shots like tonight, my confidence level will stay the same."

Antonio McDyess led Denver with 20 points, helping the Nuggets improve to 3-0 in games decided by three points or less. Fortson recorded his 13th double-double of the season with 13 points and 16 rebounds while playing a career-high 43 minutes.

The Nuggets had a 78-77 lead when Danny Fortson blocked a potental dunk by Murray with 15 seconds remaining. Billups made two free throws to put the Nuggets ahead by three.

Murray redeemed himself by hitting a leaning 3-pointer with 8.7 seconds to play, forcing an 80-80 tie and setting up Billups' heroics.

Rookie Tyrone Nesby scored 21 points and Murray had 15 for the Clippers, who suffered their fifth straight loss and their second in seven days to Denver.

"We were able to get back into the game," Murray said. "It was a tough loss because we were in it at the end. (Billups) just made a tough shot. I don't think the guys are going to give up or anything.

Los Angeles opened up a 14-7 lead in the first quarter 4:39 thanks to six points from rookie Michael Olowokandi. Denver answered with a 7-0 run over two minutes thanks to a three-point play from Brian Stith, tying the game at 16-16.

"We took advantage of a team we thought we could win against," Stith said. "We don't care who our victories are against; whether its the Clippers or a top team in the NBA."

Olowokandi finished the period with eight points and Fortson netted five as the game was tied at 22.

Denver used a 7-2 run to finish the first half and went ahead 45-40 at halftime. Stith punctuated the burst with a 3-pointer to close the half.

The third quarter belonged to Nesby, who scored 12 points in the period and shot 5-of-6 from the floor to pull the Clippers within 65-61.

Nick Van Exel played only six minutes due to a left knee inflammation. He is probable for Monday's game against the Los Angeles Lakers.
