Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Suns did not start playing until their coach started yelling.

The ejection of coach Danny Ainge in the third quarter ignited the Suns, as Jason Kidd overcame a 10-turnover night by scoring 15 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter of an 88-83 victory over the floundering Los Angeles Clippers.

Having lost five of their last six games, the Suns (16-18) continued their pursuit of a playoff spot. They preserved their one-game lead over Sacramento for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Ainge displayed some frustration at his club's lackluster effort by arguing with referee Ron Olesiak late in the third quarter. Olesiak slapped Ainge with a pair of quick technicals, sending the disgruntled coach to the locker room with 3:26 left.

"It's a farce that I was ejected from that game," Ainge said. "That's all I have to say."

Phoenix trailed 50-40 at the half and 67-62 early in the fourth quarter before Kidd scored eight points during a 15-2 run that opened a 77-69 lead with 5:32 to play.

"You have to credit Jason Kidd," said Los Angeles guard Eric Piatkowski. "He took over the game. He broke his man down off the dribble almost every time. We were winning and then he knocked down about four or five shots and that was it."

Cliff Robinson scored 22 points and Danny Manning and George McCloud each added 13 for Phoenix, which was without leading scorer and rebounder Tom Gugliotta due to a hyperextended right knee.

"We were able to get it done no matter how long it took us to get into the game," Robinson said. "It took about 2 1/2 quarters. We forced them out of the things they were doing and got control of the game."

Piatkowski matched his career high with 29 points for the league-worst Clippers (3-30), who have lost four in row and dropped all three games of their season series with Phoenix. The Suns have won their last five visits to Los Angeles.

"It feels good but losing starts to wear on you," Piatkowski added. "You try to get prepped and fired up for each game but it's hard when you're losing. We don't have any superstars. We need to have all five players play well to win."

Luc Longley collected 10 points for the Suns, who shot 53 percent (37-of-70) but committed 24 turnovers.

Rookie Michael Olowokandi scored 11 points and Tracy Murray added 10 for the Clippers, who shot 44 percent (33-of-75) and were outrebounded 43-30.

Kidd was 9-of-16 from the field with eight rebounds and six assists.

Trailing 59-49 with 5:50 remaining in the third quarter, the Suns finally got their act together. Longley and rookie Pat Garrity hit consecutive jumpers and Robinson made a layup and 3-pointer to cut the deficit to one with 3:43 left.

But Ainge took exception to a foul Olesiak called on McCloud on Los Angeles' ensuing trip.

"(Ainge) didn't say anything," Robinson said. "The official was already upset. He was told not to say anything and Danny didn't say anything major but he got tossed anyway."

Piatkowski made both technical free throws and Rodney Rogers dunked to make it 63-58 with 3:17 left.

Lorenzen Wright hit a nine-foot jumper to give the Clippers a 67-62 lead with 11:14 to play, before Kidd took over.

The point guard extraordinaire converted a three-point play, made a driving layup and hit 1-of-2 from the line to give the Suns a 68-67 lead with 9:53 remaining.

Sherman Douglas and Manning exchanged baskets before McCloud hit a pair of free throws and drained a 29-footer to give Phoenix the lead for good, 75-69, with 7:14 left.

Kidd sealed matters with an acrobatic fallaway jumper that resulted in an 82-73 cushion with 3:11 to go and found the Suns' floor leader buried in the first row of seats in the left corner.

"In the fourth quarter, there were a few plays where the middle was never covered," Los Angeles coach Chris Ford said. "It's fundamental basketball. After that, its just started snowballing. Jason took over the game and that was it."
