Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Walt Williams, Isaiah Rider and Rasheed Wallace scored 15 points apiece as the Portland Trail Blazers won their eighth straight game at home, 98-89 over the lowly Vancouver Grizzlies.

The Trail Blazers improved to 17-1 at the Rose Garden and 27-6 overall, the best marks in the NBA. Portland recorded its fourth win in a row and swept the three-game season series from Vancouver.

The Blazers took the lead for good at 16-15 on a eight-footer by Wallace with 4:27 left in the first quarter. Rider scored five straight Portland points in the last minute of the quarter, providing a 27-22 lead.

The Blazers extended the lead to 51-39 at halftime, holding the Grizzlies to 18 points in the second quarter.

"We had to get out to that big lead because we were minus Brian Grant and Jermaine O'Neal," said Wallace. "They're both inside forces for us, so that was the big thing for the rest of us to go and do our dirty work inside."

The Grizzlies started the third quarter on a 9-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 53-49 with 8:41 left. Tony Massenburg, playing after sitting out Sunday's loss to Chicago with back spasms, keyed the run with five points. But the Blazers held on and led 69-63 going into the final 12 minutes.

"We had a little burst at the beginning of the third quarter and they just started hitting big shots and we couldn't," said Vancouver guard Mike Bibby. "They've got great depth, they are all athletic and they come at you either way."

Portland built the lead to as much as 13 points twice in the fourth quarter.

Shareef Abdul-Rahim and rookies Felipe Lopez and Bibby scored 19 points apiece to lead Vancouver, which has dropped 22 of its last 24 games and is just 1-16 on the road.

"Every time we laid down a little, that's when they picked up their energy," said Lopez. "You've got to play hard all 48 minutes and we did that a little in the third quarter. But then we lost it. We have to learn to sustain our energy."

Portland's depth showed again as its bench outscored Vancouver's, 39-13. Kelvin Cato added a season-high 14 points in 22 minutes. The Blazers made 23 free throws to 15 for the Grizzlies.

"Just another game," said Cato. "Today the ball was falling and I got good post positions and they kept giving me the ball. It was just another day. We play again in two more days."

The Blazers played without forward Brian Grant, their leading rebounder who sat out with a bone bruise in his left knee.

Vancouver committed 15 turnovers, which led to 23 Portland points. The Blazers had 14 fast-break points to just four for the Grizzlies.
