Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Shawn Kemp scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Cleveland Cavaliers pulled away early and never looked back en route to a 96-89 victory over the slumping Chicago Bulls.

Kemp and Cedric Henderson combined to score 15 points in the first 12 minutes as the Cavaliers had their most effective quarter of the season, jumping out to a commanding 36-17 lead.

Brevin Knight had 19 points and 15 assists and Wesley Person scored 18 points for the Cavaliers, who have won three games in a row.

"We need to come out with that same intensity (every night)," said Person. "But we found a way to hold on and win the ballgame. We have 18 games left and we are putting ourselves in position to at least go for a run at the playoffs."

The win pulled the Cavaliers into a tie with New York for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

Dickey Simpkins scored 21 points, Toni Kukoc collected 19 and rookie Kornel David added a season-high 16 for the Bulls, who have dropped five straight road games and three of four overall.

"We had a plan and we tried to execute, but the Cavs found the right spots and the right people to hit the shots," Kukoc said. "We couldn't make anything happen in the offensive end."

Kemp set the tone early, throwing down a thunderous slam and drawing a foul from Simpkins just 15 seconds into play. He sank the ensuing free throw to spark a game-opening 11-4 run capped by Andrew DeClercq's driving dunk with 9:13 left.

Henderson, who finished with 15 points, added an emphatic slam of his own with 38 seconds to go in the first quarter as the Cavs opened a 35-14 bulge.

"Everything was going our way, but we have to continue to do that throughout the entire game," Knight said. "Chicago wasn't going to lay down. Their defense at the start of the game left a lot of our guys open."

Cleveland shot an astounding 71 percent (15-of-21) in the first quarter and scored 17 points off nine Chicago turnovers.

"We came out and didn't meet the pressure that they gave us," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "We had turnovers in the first quarter that led to baskets. I thought their pressure was terrific and defensively we were on our heels."

Mark Bryant scored 13 points for the Bulls, who did battle back in the third quarter. David's layup capped a 26-18 period for Chicago that closed the deficit to 72-61.

"We dug a hole and we couldn't exactly reach the top," said Bryant. "The first half they were getting layups and dunks."

David made another layup before Bill Wennington hit an 18-footer and a pair of free throws to cap an 8-0 run that pulled the Bulls within 72-67 with 9:32 to play.

"The second half we came out a little flat," said Kemp. "We didn't get the play off our bench tonight and we struggled. The main thing that we have to do is learn how to protect a lead. We were winning by 20 points at one time and we have to start playing a little smarter and better."

Knight responded by draining consecutive jumpers to stretch the lead back to nine with 8:01 left. Person's 3-pointer with 5:06 remaining made it 83-71 and dimmed any hopes of a comeback by Chicago.

The Cavs shot 51 percent (35-of-69) and limited Chicago to 42 percent (31-of-74) from the field. Both teams grabbed 36 rebounds, but the Bulls crawled back into the contest by making 19-of-21 free throws in the second half.

"Chicago has a lot of pride," Cleveland coach Mike Fratello said. "They came back and made the game very, very interesting at the end by getting to the free-throw line and making their free throws plus making some big open shots when they had to make them."
