Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Grant Hill scored 15 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter as the Detroit Pistons turned back the Atlanta Hawks, 89-82.

Hill, who missed two shots and a pair of free throws in the final minute of Monday's loss to Indiana, left nothing to chance in the final 12 minutes of this game. He scored eight of the Pistons' first 11 points in the final period, including an 18-footer that gave them a 79-69 lead with 5:54 to play.

"It's a good win. We did lose two games to playoff teams, so it was good to get a win versus a playoff-caliber team," said Hill. "If it comes down to the end, we have the tiebreaker with Atlanta. It could happen; we won two and they won one."

"It doesn't matter what happened Monday, we're going to live or die with Grant down the stretch," said Pistons coach Alvin Gentry. "Tonight, he was good. He's not always going to hit those shots, but tonight he controlled the game."

Atlanta scrambled to close within 85-82 on a six-foot hook shot by Dikembe Mutombo with 2:16 to play, but Lindsey Hunter hit a 20-foot arching shot 28 seconds later to rebuild the lead to five. Hill capped the scoring with a pair of free throws at the 1:05 mark.

"Our plan was to go in and shut down everybody and let Grant beat us, and he did today," said Mutombo. "Grant Hill shot the ball very well like I haven't seen before. So I think that was the reason why they were able to stay in the game and win."

"Grant Hill had a hell of a game," added Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens. "He made big shots and played very well. Grant got it going and when he does, you have to get up a little more on him. That's the best I've seen him play in a while."

Bison Dele added 18 points and Hunter finished with 11 for the Pistons, who have won seven of the last eight home meetings with Atlanta. Detroit, which took two of three games from the Hawks this season, has a 1 1/2-game lead over the Hawks for the fourth Eastern Conference playoff spot.

"I'm not going to lie to you, this was pretty much a must-win, if for our psyche than nothing else," added Gentry. "Losing three in a row would have just shattered our confidence."

Chris Crawford scored a season-high 15 points, Mutombo had 14 and Grant Long 12 for the Hawks, who had a three-game winning streak stopped. Atlanta lost for only the second time in its last seven road games.

The Pistons established control in the second quarter. Mark West pulled the Hawks within 32-25 on a pair of free throws with 7:48 left, but Dele made two free throws and Hill hit a 17-footer to push the lead to 11 with 6:12 to go. Rookie Roshown McLeod had a bucket for Atlanta, but Dele hit a jumper and threw down a dunk around a 3-pointer by Khalid Reeves, extending Detroit's lead to 43-27 with 4:39 remaining.

Atlanta regrouped in the third quarter. Crawford had seven points in a 12-6 spurt as the Hawks pulled within 56-52 at the eight-minute mark. A three-point play by Mutombo made it 61-59 with 2:51 left, but Hunter had a 16-footer, Don Reid dunked and Eric Montross had a jumper as Detroit rebuilt the lead to 67-59 with 33 seconds to go.

Hunter had a key 3-pointer around Hill's four baskets, banking a 26-footer as the shot clock expired to give Detroit a 75-67 lead at the 8:49 mark.

"Anytime you get down that much, it takes that much energy to get back," said Crawford. "It takes a little bit out of you. Lindsey hit a couple of tough shots that put us back."

Hill was 11-of-18 from the field, adding nine assists and six rebounds for Detroit. The Pistons shot 50 percent (36-of-72) from the field as Dele went 7-of-10.

Mutombo finished with 14 points and 19 rebounds for the Hawks, who shot 41 percent (30-of-73). Long and Tyrone Corbin combined for 21 of Atlanta's 30 bench points as starting guard Mookie Blaylock was only 3-of-11 from the field.
