Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Cliff Robinson scored 27 points on 11-of-20 shooting, leading the Phoenix Suns to a 90-82 triumph over the Minnesota Timberwolves, who had a four-game winning streak snapped.

Minnesota was within 86-82 before Rex Chapman -- activated before the game -- hit a floater with 29 seconds left that bounced around the rim several times before dropping.

Malik Sealy and James Robinson each missed 3-pointers for the Timberwolves and George McCloud drained two free throws to ice the game for Phoenix.

Phoenix held on despite scoring a season-low 34 points in the second half.

The Suns won the battle of the starting frontcourts as Cliff Robinson, Luc Longley and Pat Garrity outscored Garnett, Sam Mitchell and Bill Curley, 52-25.

"We were able to get our hands on a lot of balls," Cliff Robinson said. "It created easy opportunities for ourselves. Right now I feel pretty good about my game. I don't know if it's the best I've ever played though."

"Cliff was unconscious tonight," Garnett said. "Even though Chapman didn't have one of his miraculous games, they were hitting shots with out hand in their face. We have to come out better defensively."

Phoenix also gained a measureable difference on the free throw line hitting 79 percent (19-of-24) while Minnesota connected on only 50 percent (10-of-20).

Chapman scored four points as the Suns opened the final quarter with a 7-2 run and opened an 81-69 lead with 7:35 left.

Tom Gugliotta, Phoenix's leading scorer and rebounder, missed his third straight game due to a hyperextended right knee. But the Suns posted consecutive wins for the sixth time this season. They have failed to string together three victories, however.

Garnett had 19 points and 13 rebounds for Minnesota and Joe Smith added 14 and 10. The Timberwolves were playing the first of three road games in as many days.

The Suns scored eight straight points to grab a 16-11 lead with 6:57 left in the opening period. Longley had six points during the spurt. Cliff Robinson scored 13 points in the quarter as Phoenix built a 31-22 lead.

"I really felt like we looked tired tonight," Suns coach Danny Ainge said. "I thought we played hard despite the fatigue, but we had some rubber legs out there. Our guys just battled through the night."

Cliff Robinson had four points in a 9-1 spurt that extended the Suns' advantage to 53-37 with 2:47 left in the half. He had 19 by halftime as the Suns led 56-42.

Garnett did not attempt a shot in the second quarter after netting 10 points in the opening period.

The Timberwolves closed the third quarter with a 12-4 run, pulling within 74-67.
