Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- It took more than a year and a trip out of the country, but the Denver Nuggets finally found a way to win away from home.

Nick Van Exel scored 11 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter and drilled a clutch 3-pointer down the stretch as the Nuggets posted an 87-84 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

The Nuggets won for the first time in 18 tries on the road this season and snapped a 24-game skid outside of Denver, dating to a 90-89 win at Washington on March 17, 1998.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim made a pair of free throws to give the Grizzlies an 83-80 lead with 2:25 remaining. But Chauncey Billups drilled a 32-footer as the shot-clock expired to bring the Nuggets even with two minutes left.

"Someone threw me the ball and they almost stole it, so I started running back and I saw it fall out of their hands," commented Billups. "I just took it and saw there was only two seconds left on the shot-clock, took one dribble and fired it up."

Tony Massenburg answered with a free throw to give the Grizzlies an 84-83 lead with 39 seconds to go before Van Exel nailed a 25-footer 12 seconds later to put Denver ahead for good.

On the ensuing possession, rookie Mike Bibby traveled, giving the ball back to Denver. Van Exel converted one of two free throws to push the lead to three with 18 seconds to play.

Vancouver had a last chance to send the game to overtime but Pete Chilcutt's 3-pointer bounced off the back of the rim as time expired.

Despite ranking 28th in the league in defense, the Nuggets were able hold Vancouver without a basket for the final 3:34.

"This is a ballgame we shouldn't have lost tonight," Vancouver coach Brian Hill said. "It was our inability to execute down the stretch and that cost us this basketball game and that combined with Chauncey Billups 'Hail Mary' for a three."

Antonio McDyess scored 24 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to lead the Nuggets, who took the season series from Vancouver, 3-1. McDyess made 10-of-18 shots from the floor.

"There's excitement in here," said McDyess about snapping the road losing streak. "We've got chills, we're laughing and screaming and everybody feels like we've won the national championship or something."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim poured in 25 points and Massenburg had 16 and nine rebounds for Vancouver, which has lost five straight and 23 of its last 25 games.

The Grizzlies looked nothing like the second worst team to start game, opening the contest on a 12-2 run, capped by Massenburg's free throw. Denver was able to cut the deficit to 26-23 after one period.

But fueled by 11 points and 10 from Abdur-Rahim, the Grizzlies were able to open a 48-41 advantage at the half. Abdur-Rahim finished 7-of-18 from the floor and did most of his damage at the free throw line, making 11-of-12 attempts.

Vancouver shot 44 percent (30-of-69) while the Nuggets finished at 42 percent (34-of-82) from the floor.

Danny Fortson added 14 rebounds for Denver, which held a 43-40 edge on the boards.
