Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Penny Hardaway scored 23 points and the Orlando Magic notched their season-high fifth straight win by allowing just five baskets over the final 21-plus minutes of a 73-69 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Hardaway had two clutch baskets down the stretch, turning back the Cavaliers after they had cut the deficit to two points. He is averaging 26.2 points in his last five games.

"I don't know how we got back into the game in the second half," Hardaway said. "We must have wanted to be around in the fourth quarter, hoping they would get tired. I moved to shooting guard and my teammates are setting me up real well."

After a second straight 3-pointer by Wesley Person gave the Cavs a 48-38 lead with 9:47 left in the third quarter, Cleveland had just five field goals the rest of the way. It shot just 3-of-17 in the fourth quarter.

Rookie Matt Harpring had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Magic, who had won four straight games on four other occasions this season. Orlando last won five in a row from February 16-25, 1998.

Shawn Kemp collected 17 points and nine rebounds for Cleveland (17-17), which fell one game behind Philadelphia and Toronto in the race for the final two Eastern Conference playoff berths. The Cavs were playing their third game in three nights.

"We have to stop worrying about the playoffs and just win games," Kemp said. "I don't know how far we would go if we made the playoffs."

"I think the Cavs got there energy in the second half, then you can see they were dragging a little bit in the third quarter," Armstrong said. "In the fourth it seemed like they couldn't hit anything, like their legs were gone or something."

"We have to credit the defense of Orlando and the other part was it was one of those nights when the shots didn't go down for us," Cavs coach Mike Fratello said. "If you're open and they are good shots you have to shoot them and make them. We played three tough games in three nights."

Play was ragged, with both teams shooting around 35 percent. A head-to-head collision between Harpring and Kemp left both with bumps cuts that required bandages.

"We were really scratching around trying get help somewhere," Orlando coach Chuck Daly said. "Then we lose Harpring with cut eyes, and it looked like a boxing match. We need a cut man in our corner."

The Cavs stayed in the game with free-throw shooting. They made 18-of-19 from the line while the Magic sank just 14-of-27.

After Person's 3-pointers, Orlando scored 21 of the next 23 points to open a 59-50 lead with 2:23 left in the third quarter. Hardaway scored eight points and Nick Anderson five in the run, while Cleveland's only basket was a jumper by Kemp.

A jumper by Brevin Knight opened the fourth quarter and capped an 8-0 spurt, pulling the Cavs within 59-58. Cleveland did not score again from the field until a tip-in by Kemp provided the final tie at 62-62 with 6:15 remaining.

"We need more aggressive at the end of the game," Kemp said. "Orlando was the aggressor. They were the ones taking the basketball to the basket. The whole night we resorted to jump shots. When the other team makes you take jump shots, it's not going to be a good end of the game for us."

Orlando's Derek Strong made a jumper and Hardaway followed with a driving layup for a 66-62 edge with 3:24 left. Kemp made two free throws before Hardaway drilled a jumper with 2:11 to go. A hook by Isaac Austin pushed the lead to 70-64 with 1:38 to play.

"Penny came up big, particularly in the second half," Orlando coach Chuck Daly said.

Cleveland's final basket was a 3-pointer by Derek Anderson with 10 seconds to go. Harpring made 1-of-2 free throws to seal it.

Guards Anderson and Darrell Armstrong combined for just 11 points but grabbed 22 rebounds for the Magic, who shot just 35 percent (28-of-80) but held a 53-38 edge on the glass.

"I'm a big man in a little man's body," the 6-1 Armstrong said. "I was getting a lot of loose rebounds and that's the type of rebounds you've got to get."

Knight collected 14 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Cavs, who shot under 35 percent (23-of-66) and committed 19 turnovers.

"Effort does not win ballgames, points do," Kemp said. "It's great to have a great effort, but it doesn't win games for you. We have the intensity, but we need to put together 48 good minutes. We're not a team that can play 35 minutes and expect to win."
