Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs wasted no time asserting themselves against the Houston Rockets.

Duncan had 18 points and 13 rebounds as the Spurs got off to a quick start and used a balanced attack to defeat the Rockets, 92-83, and extend their winning streak to six games.

The Rockets came in with a nine-game home winning streak and could have moved past the Spurs into second place in the Midwest Division with another victory. But Duncan spearheaded the charge that saw all five Spurs starters score in double figures.

"We didn't have the fire we needed," said Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "I don't understand the lack of intensity. They are a good team but I expected it to be more of a game than it was."

Sean Elliott scored 10 of his 19 points in the first quarter for San Antonio, which has won nine of its last 10 games and stayed within 1 1/2 games of first-place Utah in the Midwest.

"Where you finish is going to be very important," Elliott said. "The fourth or fifth spot (in the conference) is going to be a real battle and I don't think I want to start the playoffs that way."

"It was a war like we thought it would be," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "These guys compete against each other really tough. We're just happy to come out of here with a win."

Hakeem Olajuwon had 27 points and 12 rebounds for Houston, which has lost twice at home to San Antonio this season. Star forward Scottie Pippen was limited to just four in 34 minutes.

"Elliott guarded Pippen most of the game and I think he did a really great job," Popovich said. "Nobody ever seems to notice how hard he works defensively."

"I was probably too tentative on offense," said Pippen, who was 2-of-7 from the field. "I was not aggressive enough, plus my finger was bothering me. We know we can beat that team, we just have to go out there and show it."

Consecutive 3-pointers by former Rocket Mario Elie and Elliott gave San Antonio a 20-11 lead midway through the opening period. A 12-footer by Duncan widened the margin to 28-17 with 2:44 to go before Houston rattled off nine straight points.

The Spurs led 32-26 after one quarter and took charge in the second period. Duncan scored four points in an 11-2 spurt that was capped by Malik Rose's three-point play, giving San Antonio a 45-32 lead with 7:01 left. A 3-pointer by Jaren Jackson ended an 8-0 burst that gave the Spurs their largest lead at 53-35 with 2:59 to go.

"I thought we did a good job of getting Houston out of what they wanted to do," Spurs center David Robinson said. "They didn't look like a transition team with the 50 or so post-ups they were in."

Houston fought back to 54-43 at halftime and the teams played even in the third quarter. A three-point play by Charles Barkley cut the deficit to 77-71 with 10:03 remaining before Duncan rebounded his own miss and scored.

Olajuwon followed with a jumper and Barkley could have made it a four-point game but missed two free throws. David Robinson responded with a layup and Avery Johnson hit a 20-footer for an 83-73 lead with 6:07 left and the Spurs easily held on.

Elie scored 14 points, Robinson added 13 and nine rebounds and Johnson had 10 points and 10 assists for the Spurs, who shot 49 percent (37-of-76) from the field and held a 44-39 edge in rebounds.

"We executed our offense really good and we made our shots and played real good defense," Johnson said. "It was a good win."

Rookie guards Michael Dickerson and Cuttino Mobley scored 15 and 12 points, respectively, and Barkley added 11 and 11 boards for Houston, which shot 44 percent (31-of-70).
