Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Allen Iverson scored nine of his 23 points in the first quarter, when the Philadelphia 76ers raced to a 14-point lead en route to an 83-67 rout of the Boston Celtics, who were held to their lowest total of the season.

Theo Ratliff contributed 16 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocked shots for the 76ers, who opened a 27-10 lead on two free throws by George Lynch with 42 seconds left in the opening quarter. Boston got no closer than seven points thereafter.

"We played well defensively tonight, but we're still not at the point where we were earlier when we were at out best," said Iverson. "Theo was huge. We were laughing on the bench every time he swatted one away, laughing at the guy who had his shot blocked."

Philadelphia, seeking only its second playoff appearance this decade, moved into seventh place in the Eastern Conference, one game ahead of Toronto.

"Defense comes first with us and to be a big part of the defensive effort was great," said Ratliff. "I didn't know exactly how many blocks I had. You don't think about a double-double until late, and by that time, the game was over. It was a huge game for us because it was a road win and keeps us in the thick of the playoff race."

Rookie Paul Pierce scored 22 points and Dana Barros added 13 off the bench for the Celtics, whose previous low this season came in an 87-68 loss to Minnesota on March 24.

Boston had a two-game winning streak stopped and has lost five of its last seven. The Celtics have won three straight games just once this season.

"Philly had tremendous defensive energy, that was pretty obvious," Celtics coach Rick Pitino said. "They defended well from the start and carried their intensity throughout.

The 76ers scored the first four points of the contest on baskets by Iverson and Lynch. Pierce answered with a tip-in for the Celtics, but Philadelphia scored the next seven points to take control.

Harvey Grant scored on a short hook shot, Eric Snow sank the second of two free throws attempts and Lynch made a layup. Iverson's 20-foot jumper put the 76ers ahead, 11-2, just under 10 minutes into the contest.

Philadelphia slowly built its lead over the rest of the first quarter and had a 27-13 cushion after the first 12 minutes. The Celtics fought back within 38-31 on Greg Minor's jumper with 2:40 left in the second period, but the 76ers closed the half with an 8-0 run.

Ratliff threw down a dunk and Grant and Iverson made layups. Ratliff sank two free throws with 34 seconds to play to make it 46-31 at the break.

Snow had nine points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the 76ers, who connected on only 37 percent (30-of-82) of its field goals, including 1-of-7 from beyond the arc. But they held a 51-48 advantage on the boards. Philadelphia also turned 20 Boston turnovers into 14 points.

Philadelphia's biggest lead came with 4:53 remaining, when Iverson made a pair of foul shots to complete a 9-0 run and make it 81-56. Iverson scored seven of the nine points during the spurt.

"The booing doesn't get to us," said Celtics forward Antoine Walker, who was 1-of-11 from the field. "Tonight we understand why they were upset. We had no energy from the start and they outhustled us to practically every ball."

Pierce grabbed 14 boards and Ron Mercer had 12 points and six rebounds for Boston, which shot a 31 percent (26-of-83) and was 4-of-20 from 3-point range.

"You know you're defending well when you hold that team to under 36 percent from the floor," said 76ers coach Larry Brown.
