Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Bobby Phills hit a 16-foot jumper with two-tenths of a second remaining as the Charlotte Hornets pulled out a 90-88 victory over the slumping Washington Wizards.

"This team wouldn't be where they are without Bobby Phills," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "He's one of my veteran players, so I called his number."

Elden Campbell scored a season-high 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Charlotte, which used a 10-2 run to take an apparently comfortable 88-82 lead with 2:08 remaining.

But the Wizards, still seeking their first victory under interim coach Jim Brovelli, did not quit. Otis Thorpe and Rod Strickland made back-to-back jumpers before Thorpe hit a wide-open layup off a perfect feed from Strickland to knot the contest at 88-88 with 22 seconds to play.

"It's a credit to this team that we played well down the stretch," said Brovelli. "This was a good effort from us, real good actually."

Phills received an inbounds pass from Campbell and dribbled down the clock before backing his man into the post and pulling out for a quick fadeway jumper that gave the Hornets their second straight win after a five-game losing streak.

"I called my own number during the timeout," Phills said. "I'm glad coach had confidence in me. They were looking at Eddie (Jones) so I think we took them by surprise on that last shot."

"Bobby made a strong cut and I just laid it in for him, and he was able to hit it," Campbell added. "We have to go out and make things happen and play our style of basketball the rest of the season."

Strickland matched a season high with 25 points and handed out 12 assists. Thorpe scored 20 points for the Wizards, who suffered their season-high fifth consecutive loss.

Mitch Richmond, whose first season in Washington has been less than spectacular, managed only five points on 2-of-14 shooting as the Wizards fell to 0-3 under Brovelli.

"On the last play, we wanted to play good defense," Richmond said. "They just made a good play and made a good shot. The ball has not been bouncing our way. I had some open looks. It was a combination of me not making shots and not making the right decisions."

Jones scored 15 points and David Wesley added 13 for Charlotte, which was without leading rebounder Derrick Coleman. He has missed the last two games with a sprained left ankle.

Juwan Howard had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Wizards, who shot 46 percent (39-of-84) but were only 10-of-13 from the foul line.

The Hornets, who made 21-of-29 free throws, shot 40 percent (32-of-81) and committed only eight turnovers while forcing 14.

Charlotte had a 69-62 lead entering the fourth quarter before Howard capped a 16-9 spurt with a 10-foot jumper that tied the contest with 5:41 remaining.

Strickland, who was 11-of-20 from the field, sank an 11-footer that gave Washington its last lead, 80-78, with five minutes to play.

Campbell made a pair from the line and Wesley drained a 3-pointer to make it 83-80 with 3:58 left. Thorpe answered with an 18-footer before Wesley beat the shot clock with a 13-footer form the left sideline with 2:56 remaining.

"Washington's record does not do them any justice," Campbell said. "They are playing very hard."

Phills made a 3-pointer to give Charlotte a six-point bulge with 2:08 to go before Washington made its late run and set up Phills' heroics.

The win moved the Hornets within four games of New York for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

"We've got to keep on winning games and it will all fall in place if it's meant to be," said Silas.

"We have to control our own destiny," added Phills. "We can't ask for help from other teams. We dug ourselves in this hole and now we have to go out and do our jobs."

The teams split two meetings earlier this season in Washington.
