Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Clifford Robinson did the unthinkable and Karl Malone made the Phoenix Suns pay.

Fouled by Robinson while attempting a 3-pointer with six-tenths of a second left, Malone made all three free throws to lift the Utah Jazz to an unlikely 93-92 victory over the Suns.

Chris Morris appeared to hand a loss to his former team when he drained a 3-pointer from the right corner with 3.7 seconds remaining to make it 92-90. After two timeouts, the Jazz inbounded at half-court to Malone, who initially tried handing to John Stockton.

Unable to get the ball to his point guard, Malone turned and lofted a shot that bounced off the rim. But the Jazz were given new life when Robinson was whistled for a foul. Malone's first free throw bounced around the rim before falling in, and he swished the other two, giving the Jazz the win.

"Everyone wants to be in the position, but it feels good after the fact," Malone said. "I come out early before anyone gets here and shoot 50-100 free throws before every game and just get into a rhythm because situations like that happen in the ballgame."

Phoenix had one desperation chance, but Jason Kidd's fallaway from the 3-point line missed at the buzzer.

"I thought he would miss at least one because the first one was kind of shaky," said Morris. "You know the first is always the worst one when you're trying to shoot. But it went in for him, and I wish it would have went into overtime."

Malone scored 31 points and Shandon Anderson tied a season high with 17 for the Jazz, who have won five straight and improved to 15-1 at home.

"I don't know if I've every seen a game like that that comes down to three free throws with so little time left. But I can't think of anybody else who I would have wanted on the line at that time," Jazz coach Jerry Soan said.

Kidd had 19 points and 11 assists for Phoenix, which had a brief two-game winning streak stopped.

"It was a tough game, but it was a great game to lose," said Suns coach Danny Ainge. "I really enjoyed the game. I really thought we had the game. I can't fault our guys for anything. It was a tough game to lose and we've had a few like it this year."

A tight contest throughout had Phoenix ahead 87-86 with 1:50 to play after Kidd took a feed underneath from Rex Chapman and made a layup. Kidd added two free throws moments later and stole an entry pass. But the Suns were not able to capatilize as Chapman misfired on a jumper from the left corner.

Utah worked the ball to Malone on the right baseline and his turnaround jumper with 53 seconds left cut the deficit to a single point. Kidd missed a runner with 36 seconds left, resulting in a jump ball that was won by Utah.

The Jazz looked for Malone on the ensuing possession but ended up going to Bryon Russell, who hit a jumper over Chapman from the top of the key that put Utah in front, 90-89, with 10 seconds left.

"I thought Bryon's shot to keep us in the game was just as crucial (as Malone's free throws)," Sloan observed. "And of course Chris Morris hit the three for them, so all in all, it was a pretty exciting game."

Russell had 10 points and Greg Ostertag grabbed 11 rebounds for the Jazz before suffering a cut left eye in the second half. Utah shot 51 percent (35-of-69) from the floor and overcame 19 turnovers by holding a 43-26 advantage on the boards.

The Suns turned Utah's miscues into 27 points but shot just 46 percent (38-of-82) while going 6-of-18 from beyond the arc.

Phoenix center Luc Longley suffered a left knee injury in the first quarter and played only five minutes.
