Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Shawn Kemp had 24 points and 12 rebounds and the Cleveland Cavaliers shut down the Atlanta Hawks in the first quarter en route to an 81-67 victory, ending a seven-game losing streak in the series.

Kemp and Wesley Person each scored eight points in the opening period, matching Atlanta's record-setting total. The club's previous worst first quarter was nine against New Jersey on December 9, 1981.

Kemp scored six points and Person and Brevin Knight added four apiece in an 18-2 run that set the tone and gave Cleveland a double-digit lead it never relinquished.

Person scored 14 points and Knight added 12 and 13 assists for the Cavaliers (18-17), who snapped a two-game losing streak and beat the Hawks for the first time since November 19, 1996.

"When I got to the arena and found out we lost seven straight to them, it was really a good motivation for them," Kemp said. "We really played 48 good minutes tonight."

Cleveland moved into a tie with Toronto for ninth place in the Eastern Conference, one-half game behind New York for the final playoff berth.

"It's another important game and if you stay in his race every one of these games is an important one," said Cavs coach Mike Fratello. "We are in the (ninth) spot right now, and we are trying to make it to eight or seven."

Only a 3-pointer by Ed Gray in the final second allowed Atlanta to surpass its previous first-half low of 28 against Cleveland on March 24, 1995. The 67 points matched a season low against Orlando on March 1.

The Hawks shot just 29 percent (20-of-69) from the field and committed 16 turnovers. Atlanta's baskets were a franchise low and just two more than the NBA all-time low, set tonight by Chicago.

Alan Henderson scored 18 points for the Hawks (22-16), who have lost three in a row following a three-game winning streak. Atlanta has not scored above 85 points in its last nine games.

"Of course I'm mad," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We started the game with three unforced turnovers. The excecution was horrendous."

"Tonight was one of the worst scenarios I have ever lived," Hawks center Dikembe Mutombo said. "Our game was poor. We just played poorly offensively and defensively."

With the score tied 4-4, the Cavs broke open the game. Kemp made a jumper and Knight made two free throws and a basket for a 10-4 lead with 7:15 left in the first quarter.

"Our strength is get at the teams defensively, force them into bad shots and then run off of that," Knight said. "We need to win and that is the bottom line, no matter how we have to do it. If it is ugly, it's ugly and if it is pretty, it's pretty."

Henderson scored, but that was Atlanta's last points for more than six minutes. Kemp had a pair of inside hoops around a jumper by Person and Johnny Newman added a 19-footer for an 18-6 lead with 4:25 to go.

Hawks forward Chris Crawford was called for a technical foul and Newman missed the free throw. But Person made a short jumper and Corie Blount sank two free throws, capping the burst at 22-6 with 1:03 left.

A layup by Tyrone Corbin with 48 seconds remaining finally ended the scoreless stretch at 6:16 but the Hawks never recovered. They trailed 45-31 at halftime, 66-50 after three quarters and 71-50 on a jumper by Cedric Henderson with 9:25 left.

Hawks guard Anthony Johnson was ejected with 11:08 to play in the second quarter after elbowing Cavs guard Bob Sura in the face.

"It costs too much money to retaliate," Sura said.

"He has to learn that that is not the time to do it even though the guy is irritating and grabbing a hold of him," Wilkens said. "You have to pick your moment and that was obviously the wrong moment."

Henderson scored 10 points and Blount grabbed 12 rebounds for the Cavs, who shot 45 percent (34-of-76).
