Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Terry Cummings sank the go-ahead jumper with 35 seconds remaining and made a huge defensive play at the buzzer as the Golden State Warriors held on for a 91-90 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

Cummings' jumper with 35 seconds left gave the Warriors an 89-88 lead. Jason Caffey had a dunk off steal three seconds later, pushing the lead to three.

Gary Trent, who finished with a career-high 33 points, made a 10-footer to bring the Mavericks within 91-90 with 23 seconds to go.

On the Warriors' ensuing possession, Cummings was tied up by Shawn Bradley. The 7-6 Bradley won the tip, giving the ball back to Dallas for one final chance with eight seconds left. After a timeout, the Mavericks went to Trent but Cummings got a piece of his shot as time expired.

"You would think that you might get the call at home," said Dallas coach Don Nelson, referring to the final play. "I thought Gary made an aggressive move and they decided not to call it."

Cummings and Bimbo Coles scored 14 points apiece to lead the Warriors, who snapped a three-game losing streak while finishing 2-4 on a six-game road trip.

"We've had a lot of games like this and we're probably going to have a lot more, especially with these guys," Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "It seems like every time we play them, it comes down to the last possession."

The Warriors remained 2 1/2 games behind the Phoenix Suns for the final playoff berth in the Western Conference.

Michael Finley contributed 17 points and Bradley had 13 and 12 rebounds for Dallas, which has lost three in a row and six of seven.

The Mavericks built a 74-69 advantage with 9:06 remaining on Finley's 18-footer before Cummings scored six straight points to give Golden State a one-point advantage with 7 1/2 minutes left.

Cummings scored eight points in final quarter. He finished 6-of-8 from the floor and also grabbed eight rebounds.

Led by Cummings and Donyell Marshall, who scored 11 points, the Warriors' bench outscored the Dallas reserves, 51-17.

Trent had a huge first half, scoring 21 points and helping the Mavericks to a 48-45 advantage. He made 6-of-8 shots and went 9-of-15 from the line.

Trent finished 10-of-16 and made 13-of-20 free throws as he surpassing his career high of 29 against Sacramento on February 27.

"We lost by one and I missed seven free throws," Trent said. "That's the game right there. If I would have hit them, we would have won. If you give me the ball to score and I get fouled I have to go to the line and hit them."

Golden State shot 47 percent (38-of-81) from the floor while holding Dallas to 39 percent (32-of-82).

The Warriors remained 2 1/2 games behind the Phoenix Suns for the final playoff berth in the Western Conference.
