Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- One night after the best defensive performance in NBA history, the Miami Heat's worst defensive effort of the season was still good enough to win.

Jamal Mashburn scored a season-high 25 points and Alonzo Mourning added 23 as the Heat uncharacteristically relied on offense and held off the slumping Milwaukee Bucks, 95-92, for their fifth straight victory.

On Saturday, the Heat held the Chicago Bulls to 49 points, the lowest total since the advent of the shot clock in 1954. They were nowhere near as effective against the Bucks, who became the first team to shoot better than 50 percent against Miami this season.

The Heat, who have won five straight and 22 of their last 23 overall against the Bucks, shot 55 percent (34-of-62) and scored their highest point total since a 102-76 rout of New Jersey on March 14. But they nearly blew a 10-point lead in the final two minutes.

"There is no team that will outshoot the Bucks," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "They have four or five of the best shooters in the league."

Riley collected his 938th career victory, tying the legendary Red Auerbach for third on the all-time list. He needs six to catch Dick Motta but is well behind all-time leader Lenny Wilkens of the Atlanta Hawks.

Ray Allen scored 25 points for the Bucks, who have lost two in a row and four of their last five games. Milwaukee (20-16) remained sixth in the Eastern Conference, one-half game ahead of the New York Knicks.

"This team is still learning to win a big game. We just haven't finished a game off," Bucks coach George Karl said.

Miami led by 15 points early in the fourth quarter and still held a 94-84 advantage aftre two free throws by Mourning with 2:56 to play. But the Heat got sloppy and Glenn Robinson hit four free throws before Allen made a pair of baskets, cutting the deficit to 94-92 with 15 seconds to go.

Terry Porter was fouled and missed 1-of-2 free throws, giving Milwaukee another chance. But the best 3-point shooting team in the NBA did not even attempt one as Haywoode Workman and Allen missed drives and time expired.

"I thought the last eight minutes was a gutty effort by our players," Karl said. "Our guys have done a good job of being a super defensive team in the fourth quarter. We seem to learn as the game goes on."

"They are a real tough team to play against," Riley said. "They make you make plays. They trap you and make you come out of your offense. They limit you with what you want to do throughout the course of the game."

Tim Hardaway scored 14 points and P.J. Brown added 10 for the Heat, who held a 32-30 rebounding edge and overcame 17 turnovers. Mashburn also pulled down nine rebounds in his best game since returning from a bone bruise on his knee.

Workman scored 15 points and Robinson added 14 for the Bucks, who were outscored 18-9 from the circle and 21-15 from the line.

"We didn't do anything to alter their shooters," Mourning said. "They were sticking it from the outside, but fortunately our defensive lapses didn't cost us the game."

Primarily working inside, Mashburn scored 15 points in the first quarter, helping Miami to a 27-26 lead. He added six more in the second period as the Heat widened the lead to 54-49 at halftime.

"He can score; we were looking for him down low," Riley said. "But when Mash is making his outside shot, he is going to be unstoppable."

Milwaukee shot 56 percent in the first half but cooled off in the third quarter. After a basket by Workman gave the Bucks a 61-61 tie with 6:21 remaining, the Heat rattled off 10 straight points, including four by Mourning.

Mourning scored 11 points in the period, including the final five as Miami opened a 76-65 lead entering the final 12 minutes.

"In the third quarter, we started playing harder and better," Riley said.
