Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Clippers may have the worst record in the NBA, but on this night they were better than the league's top team.

Less than 24 hours after losing by 27 points to the Trail Blazers, the Clippers scored the final 12 points and snapped their 12-game losing streak in Portland with an 89-83 triumph.

Maurice Taylor scored 23 points and Sherman Douglas added 19 to help Los Angeles snap a 10-game overall skid against Portland.

With the Clippers down 83-81, Douglas drove down the lane and had his floater goaltended by Kelvin Cato with 1:24 remaining to tie the contest.

Douglas missed a floater in the lane but rookie center Michael Olowokandi slammed home the rebound with 1:01 left, giving the Clippers an 85-83 lead.

On the ensuing possession, Eric Piatkowski tipped a pass by the Blazers' Walt Williams. The ball was heading out of bounds when Murray leaped over the end line and saved it to Douglas, who was fouled. He made two free throws with 31 seconds left, putting the Clippers ahead, 87-83.

Rookie Tyrone Nesby stole the in-bounds pass from Williams and hit two free throws to provide the final margin and give Los Angeles just its second road win of the season. The other road triumph came on March 21 against Minnesota.

Portland held a 76-67 lead with 7:51 left but Los Angeles ended the game with a 22-7 run, with Taylor scoring the first 14 points of that spurt. He was 4-of-7 from the floor and made all six of his foul shots.

"The guards were giving me the ball in positions where I could score," Taylor said. "I scored a couple down in the box. Naturally after that, they started coming to me a lot more. And some easy baskets helped me, too.

In Saturday's 97-70 loss, the Clippers squandered a 20-3 lead by giving up bursts of 19-0 and 15-4.

"In less than 24 hours, we made a great turnaround," Clippers coach Chris Ford said. "At breakfast this morning, we broke down the game film and showed our guys what we didn't do against Portland on (Saturday). It's nice to see this after all of the struggles we've had."

Los Angeles gained a decided edge at the line, hitting 28-of-38 while Portland converted on just 19-of-21.

Isaiah Rider scored 17 points and Rasheed Wallace added 16 as Portland fell for only the second time in 19 home games. It is one-half game ahead of Utah for the best record in the West.

"It was a disappointing loss, not just because of last night, but because we didn't finish the game out way we wanted," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "You extend that kind of energy two nights in a row and it takes something out of you."

The Trail Blazers played without Brian Grant, who sat out with a bone bruise in his left knee. He is expected to return Tuesday when Portland hosts the Los Angeles Lakers.

Los Angeles used a 10-4 first-quarter run to go ahead 14-10 with 5:42 left. Nesby, who finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds, scored seven points during that spurt, helping the Clippers gain a 22-21 lead after the first 12 minutes.

An 8-2 run by the Blazers put them ahead 34-29 with six minutes left in the first half. Wallace netted four points during that burst.

Portland gained a 46-44 lead at intermission thanks to 10 points apiece from Damon Stoudamire and Arvydas Sabonis. Stoudamire was held scoreless in the second half.

The Clippers were held scoreless for almost four minutes of the third quarter. The Blazers took advantage, scoring five straight points during a 9-2 run. Rider netted four, helping Portland grab a 59-51 lead with 4:30 left.
