Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Chicago Bulls scored 32 more points than they did on Saturday and still lost.

In a matchup of two of the Eastern Conference's worst teams, Antoine Walker had 23 points and 11 rebounds and Ron Mercer added 18 points as the Boston Celtics edged the Bulls, 87-81.

Just 24 hours removed from an embarrassing 82-49 loss to the Miami Heat -- the worst scoring effort since the advent of the shot clock in 1954 -- the Bulls had 50 points midway through the third quarter. Despite the added offense and a season-low eight turnovers, Chicago lost its fourth straight game.

Walker was 9-of-19 from the field and Mercer 9-of-13 as Boston shot 54 percent (40-of-74). Dana Barros added 10 points and a season-high 12 assists for Boston, which has won three of its last four.

"We were real concerned about Chicago tonight because of what they did last night," Walker said. "We knew they would come at us and try to get their fast break going. I thought we did a real job tonight, especially Dana, of controlling the tempo. We always look for Dana to score but tonight he found the open man and we had a lot of open looks."

"We did a good job of knocking down open shots," Mercer said. "They played really hard."

Toni Kukoc rebounded from a 4-of-16 shooting performance to score 23 points, grab seven rebounds and hand out seven assists. Ron Harper added 19 points for the Bulls, who at 10-27 are the worst team in the conference. New Jersey is 10-26 and Boston is 13-23.

"Our effort tonight was certainly better," said Bulls coach Tim Floyd. "They shot 54 percent, I can hardly believe it. That's because our defense was intense all night. We are just struggling to score points right now."

Boston, which has split a pair of meetings with Chicago this season, had dropped seven of its previous eight home games.

The game featured 21 lead changes and six ties. The Celtics seized their biggest lead at 70-63 with 10:59 left before Harper buried a 3-pointer and Kukoc sank a nine-footer to draw Chicago within a basket with 9:42 remaining.

The teams traded baskets, with Chicago getting within 81-79 on two free throws by Harper with 3:08 left. Boston missed a pair of shots but got the rebound each time. Chicago finally got possession with just over two minutes to go but Dickey Simpkins missed an eight-footer.

Barros pushed the lead to four with a 17-footer from the left baseline but Simpkins hit a free throw with 39 seconds remaining. With Celtics ahead 83-80 and the shot clock winding down, Vitaly Potapenko buried a 21-footer to seal the victory, Boston's third in four games.

"I wasn't so sure that it was going to go in until it went through the net," Potapenko said. "We needed something because the shot clock was running down and it was kind of a desperate situation."

Randy Brown had six points, seven rebounds, six assists and eight steals for Chicago.
