Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Isaiah Rider and Damon Stoudamire led seven players in double figures with 16 points each as the Portland Trail Blazers never trailed in a convincing 113-86 rout of the Los Angeles Lakers.

After being ousted in the first round of the playoffs in each of the past two seasons by Los Angeles, Portland had something to prove when the teams met for the first time this season.

"This was a terrific win for our team," said Portland coach Mike Dunleavy. "But, it's just a start. Seriously, the way we fall down is when we start looking ahead, start looking at the standings."

The Blazers, who are tied with Utah for the league's best record, took control early and never looked back. Stoudamire scored 10 points in the opening quarter as the Blazers opened a 31-22 lead after 12 minutes and poured it on, handing the Lakers their worst loss of the season.

"I thought Damon was terrific on the break in the first half, pushing the ball on the break, distributing it to the right people and applying a lot of pressure on the Lakers," added Dunleavy. "This game gave us the opportunity to come back from the loss to the Clippers."

Brian Grant scored 13 points and Rasheed Wallace and Jim Jackson had 12 apiece as the Blazers rebounded from a humiliating 89-83 home setback to the league-worst Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday. Portland has not lost consecutive games this season.

"We came out the right way, finally," Grant said. "I think we put together a 48-minute game of good, hard, solid defense, good rotations, good double teams and limited them to one shot."

Shaquille O'Neal had 24 points and 14 rebounds and Kobe Bryant added 20 points for Los Angeles, which was without sharpshooter Glen Rice, who missed the game with tonsillitis.

"Guys on this team need to learn how to step up to a challenge," O'Neal said. "We need to get some heart. They just outplayed us tonight. We know they are gunning for us and they are going to be our measuring stick."

The Lakers have dropped three of their last five games and are fifth in the Western Conference, one-half game behind Houston.

"Portland played like they wanted it," Los Angeles coach Kurt Rambis said. "They are big, strong, quick and they play hard."

Rick Fox scored 17 points off the bench for Los Angeles, which shot 39 percent (30-of-77) and yielded 24 points off 17 turnovers.

Walt Williams scored 11 points and Kelvin Cato added 10 for the Blazers, who shot a sparkling 56 percent (40-of-71) and held a 46-39 advantage on the boards.

"Today, we played well," said Cato. "We hit big shots, but for the most part, they're still the Lakers. They played shorthanded today and we see them again and we'll have to keep playing well."

Williams made a driving layup and a 3-pointer during an 8-1 second-quarter spurt as Portland opened a 45-28 cushion with 6:06 left.

Rider fed Cato for an uncontested dunk and drained a 3-pointer as the Blazers took their largest lead, 94-66, with 9:02 to play.

"We're staying consistent and winning," Rider said. "That's what it all comes down to. We're now finding a way to win (close games). We've been holding teams off and holding leads all year."

With the win, Portland ties Orlando for the most home wins in the league this season with 18. The Blazers also increased their lead in the Pacific Division to a season-high 5 1/2 games over the Lakers.
