Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Down the stretch, the Atlanta Hawks showed the Boston Celtics why they are one of the NBA's top defensive teams.

Chris Crawford scored a career-high 17 points and the Hawks snapped a four-game losing streak by holding the Celtics without a field goal for the final 4:21 in a 77-70 victory.

Ron Mercer converted a layup to give the Celtics a 69-68 lead, but that would be their last basket. Vitaly Potapenko made 1-of-2 free throws with 3:39 remaining, pushing the lead to two.

Mookie Blaylock hit a driving layup to pull the Hawks even 14 seconds later before Grant Long sank a pair of foul shots with 77 seconds remaining, putting the Hawks ahead for good. Crawford nailed a 3-pointer with 18 seconds to play to give Atlanta a 75-70 advantage.

"I knew I had to step up," Crawford said. "We can't play as many players now as before. So we couldn't get behind which would have caused us to get tired and lose."

"I've been telling Chris to do that for so long," said Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens about Crawford. "He's got the potential to be a really great offensive player. Maybe this game will convince him of that."

Blaylock added 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists as the Hawks moved into fifth place in the Eastern Conference with Detroit losing in Charlotte. Atlanta is percentage points behind the Milwaukee Bucks for fourth place.

Dikembe Mutombo added 16 points and 17 rebounds for the Hawks, who came into the contest second in the league in scoring defense at 84.2 points per game.

"This victory was very important for us," Mutombo said. "It's been a while since we've been able to pull in a win like this. That last three minutes was just great defense for us."

Atlanta avoided its first five-game losing streak since January 21-27, 1998. The Hawks were without injured regulars Steve Smith, LaPhonso Ellis and Alan Henderson.

Mercer scored 19 points and rookie Paul Pierce had 16 for Boston, which lost for the second time in its last six games while falling to 8-10 at home.

The Hawks got off to a good start, taking a 21-12 advantage after the first quarter by using suffocating defense. Atlanta held the Celtics to just 29 percent shooting (6-of-21) in the period.

Boston pulled even at 28-28 with 5:48 left in the second quarter after Antoine Walker hit a hook shot. Walker, who entered the game averaging 19.3 points, equalled the lowest output of his career with just six points on 3-of-12 shooting.

Walker, who was the target of boos from the FleetCenter crowd, was upset by the treatment he received from the fans.

"I guess I'm not the kind of player Celtic fans want and that stinks," he said. "Unfortunately, it's like that and I enjoy playing here. For it to continue like this is a sign that it's not going to get any better. I don't know what to do. It's an uncomfortable environment but I have to stay focused on basketball."

The Hawks closed the half with a 10-4 spurt to take a 38-32 lead at intermission. Crawford scored 12 of his points in the opening 24 minutes and finished 7-of-13 from the floor.

The Celtics opened the second half on a 15-6 surge, capped by Tony Battie's dunk to take their biggest lead of the contest at 47-44 with 7:36 left in the third. Battie finished with eight points and 11 rebounds.

However, the Hawks recovered to take a 55-52 lead heading into the final period.

Each team struggled with its shooting. Atlanta shot 39 percent (28-of-72) while the Celics finished at 36 percent (30-of-83) from the floor.

Led by Mutombo and Grant Long, who had nine rebounds, the Hawks managed a 51-40 edge on the boards.
