Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Hornets continued their late playoff run and recorded their season-high fifth straight win, taking advantage of the shorthanded Detroit Pistons to post an 83-79 victory.

Eddie Jones scored 21 points and hit a key follow shot down the stretch for the Hornets, who completed a home-and-home sweep of Detroit and remained 2 1/2 games behind Philadelphia for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

"Tonight, we pulled out another good win," said Hornets coach Paul Silas. "We're just playing each game the best we can and we'll see how it falls."

David Wesley provided a spark late in the fourth quarter after being relatively quiet for much of the game. His two free throws tied it at 76-76 with 2:09 remaining and his 3-pointer a minute later -- his second field goal of the game -- put Charlotte ahead for good.

"You have to stay ready to make plays," Wesley said. "I might be on `Sportscenter' for hitting the 3 at the end, but everyone here knows I didn't have a great game."

A free throw by Don Reid pulled the Pistons within 79-77, and they had a chance to tie or take the lead after Charlotte committed a shot clock violation. But Elden Campbell deflected an entry pass by Joe Dumars and the ball went ahead to Wesley, who missed his driving attempt before Jones followed to make it a four-point game with 13.3 seconds left.

Lindsey Hunter scored 20 points and Dumars added 16 for the Pistons, but the bench provided a bigger lift and nearly helped Detroit overcome a 17-point deficit. Reserves Charles O'Bannon and Jerome Williams combined for 27 points and 16 rebounds, while Eric Montross added 11 boards off the bench.

"With the momentum we had in the second half, we should have pulled away from them," said O'Bannon, who had 14 points, seven boards and five assists.

Star forward Grant Hill, an alumnus of nearby Duke University, fought through the flu and scored four points in the first half but was unable to play thereafter. Starting center Bison Dele played only 10 minutes and was unavailable in the second half due to a strained right groin.

Pistons shooting guard Jerry Stackhouse, whose 15.9 points per game rank second on the team behind Hill, sat out with a sprained right ankle. He scored 14 points in Monday's 92-86 loss to Charlotte after missing seven of eight games.

"We can't feel sorry for ourselves that Grant's sick and Stack is out and Bison is limited," said Pistons coach Alvin Gentry. "This is the NBA and this happens all the time."

Bobby Phills drained a 3-pointer to give Charlotte its largest lead, 45-28, with 1:36 to go in the second quarter. Phills scored 19 of his 21 points in the first half, helping the Hornets take a 45-30 advantage into the break.

Despite playing without three of its top four scorers, Detroit stormed back in the third quarter with a 15-3 burst. Scoreless in the first half, Dumars had 11 points in the run and Williams' dunk capped it as the Pistons cut the deficit to 54-51 with 4:51 left.

A 3-pointer by Dumars forged a 70-70 tie with 6:25 to go before O'Bannon fed Williams for a layup to give Detroit its first lead since the opening minutes.

After Phills sank two free throws, Hunter hit back-to-back jumpers as Detroit built a 76-72 advantage with 3:16 remaining. Jones fed Campbell for a short jumper before Wesley's free throws tied it, helping hand Detroit its fifth loss in seven games.

"You give yourself a chance to win a game on the road and once you get the chance and don't win, it hurts a lot more," Dumars said. "There are no moral victories in this league. Either you win or you don't. The rallying point is big wins, not tough losses."

The Pistons fell two spots in the playoff standings to sixth in the East. They dropped one-half game behind Atlanta and Milwaukee.

Chucky Brown had a season-high 19 points and nine rebounds as he again started for Charlotte in place of Derrick Coleman, who is sidelined with a sprained left ankle. Campbell contributed 12 points and Wesley made only 2-of-8 shots from the field for eight points to go with seven assists.

"We have to try to put victories together, whether home or away," Phills said. "I want to win one game at a time and control our destiny."
