Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The frustration of the Chicago Bulls' season is beginning to show on Ron Harper's face.

One day after taking an elbow from teammate Dickey Simpkins that resulted in six stitches above the eye, Harper was hammered in the nose following a dunk by Cleveland's Shawn Kemp midway through the fourth quarter. The result was a probable broken nose and another loss for the Bulls.

Kemp scored 12 of his 27 points in the final quarter as the Cavaliers remained tied for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot with an 89-81 victory. Brevin Knight added 14 and 10 assists and Bobby Sura scored 10 points for Cleveland, which is one-half game behind seventh-place New York.

"Shawn has carried us this season," said Cavaliers coach Mike Fratello. "He's been a true leader. He's worked very hard shooting the ball facing the basket. ... We just have to learn how to hang in there when Shawn is out."

"I don't look at numbers the way other people do," Kemp said. "I look at it as scoring if that's what I need to do in order to get the team a win. I do whatever I have to do to get a victory."

Toni Kukoc had 15 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for Chicago, which suffered its sixth straight loss and fell to 10-29.

"Ron Harper appears to have broken his nose," said Bulls coach Tim Floyd. "We don't know if he will need surgery. He has been amazing all year and has played through a lot."

"Ron Harper is the captain of this ship," Simpkins added. "The captain sets the example by how hard he plays and he's taken some hits in our battle."

Kemp called the incident purely accidental.

"I know how it is for him," said Kemp. "I just got stitches myself yesterday. I didn't do it on purpose. ... It was unfortunate that he stuck his head in the way and got hurt."

The Bulls did receive a career-best 20 points from rookie Kornel David, who was 8-of-13 from the field. Chicago committed just eight turnovers but shot 39 percent (29-of-74) from the field, 3-of-12 from 3-point range and got outrebounded 46-42.

The Cavaliers took a 49-44 lead at the half, shooting 54 percent from the field (19-of-35) and making all 10 free throw attempts.

Chicago tied the game, 57-57, with 3:28 to go in the third quarter. But Knight hit a driving layup and Corie Blount buried a nine-footer. Danny Ferry added two free throws with 80 seconds left in the quarter and the Cavaliers went on to open a 67-60 edge after 36 minutes.

The Bulls got within 71-66 with 6:48 left in the contest following two free throws by Randy Brown. But Cleveland countered with single free throws by Kemp sandwiched around a layup by Cedric Henderson.

After Mark Bryant made a free throw with 3:34 remaining that sliced the Chicago deficit to 75-67, Kemp threw down a dunk. Bryant had another free throw before Kemp extended the lead to 79-68 with a 22-footer.

Kukoc buried a 3-pointer with 2:25 to go but Kemp buried his first 3-pointer of the season to seal the victory.
