Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Greg Ostertag recorded season highs with 16 points and 19 rebounds as the Utah Jazz took over the league's best record and avenged a humiliating defeat with a 103-89 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Karl Malone scored nine of his 25 points in the pivotal third quarter and John Stockton added 19 and nine assists, helping Utah (30-8) move a game in front of Portland (29-9) for the NBA's top record.

"It would be great if it were the last game, but we've got (12) more games to play," Stockton said of grabbing the league's best record. "I just hope we're there then where we are now."

Ostertag had seven offensive rebounds and also blocked five shots as the Jazz ran their winning streak to a season-high nine games. The current roll comes after back-to-back defeats, the first of which was a 103-77 loss to the league-worst Clippers on March 27.

"It's something I wish I could do every night," said Ostertag, who entered the contest averaging 5.3 points and 7.0 rebounds. "But granted, everyone has good and bad games, and I'm just trying to make it where I can get more good games than bad games."

"Tonight, he had a great performance, the kind we need out of him all of the time," Malone said. "He really stepped up for us tonight."

Sherman Douglas scored 17 points, Maurice Taylor added 16 and Lorenzen Wright had 15 and 12 rebounds for Los Angeles, which had won three of its last four games.

"I doubt very seriously if we will have any problems getting back to what helped us win," Taylor said. "We just need to put this one behind us."

Utah never trailed but was involved in a tight game through much of the first half, taking a 46-44 lead at intermission.

Clinging to a 51-48 advantage early in the third quarter, Utah reeled off 11 straight points to take command. Malone had seven points and Ostertag had three rebounds in that run, which Jeff Hornacek capped with a driving layup to give the Jazz a 62-48 lead with 6:24 left in the period.

"I thought I only had 10 or 12. I was really surprised when everybody asked me about 19," Ostertag said of his rebounding performance, which fell one shy of his career high.

Stockton contributed eight points in the third, helping Utah take a 75-61 cushion into the final period.

Los Angeles pulled within 75-66 early in the fourth on a jumper by Taylor. Ostertag entered the game at that point and helped lead the Jazz to victory, scoring six points in the final nine minutes.

A 3-pointer by Shandon Anderson built an 84-69 bulge with 8:16 to go and Ostertag preserved the 15-point lead by rejecting a layup attempt by rookie Michael Olowokandi.

A three-point play by Lamond Murray cut the Clippers' deficit to 90-83 with 3:56 remaining. Hornacek answered with two free throws and, after Ostertag rebounded a miss by Olowokandi, Stockton fed Malone for a layup. Hornacek, who scored 15 points, then converted a three-point play to create a 97-83 cushion with 2:32 to play.

In the loss to the Clippers last month, Malone and Stockton were both held to single digits in scoring for the first time since November 21, 1987. That duo combined to hit 13-of-21 from the floor this time around, atoning for their 10 turnovers.

"Well, this is a game that I really wanted to win," Malone said. "I've got a job to do and I want to do the best job that I can. We're starting to play very well. But this game means just as much to me as a Laker game, every one counts."

Bryon Russell registered 19 points and eight boards for the Jazz, who made 35-of-43 free throws and held a 46-38 edge on the glass.
