Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Mookie Blaylock scored a season-high 30 points and backcourt mate Steve Smith added 20 in his return to the lineup as the Atlanta Hawks defeated the Orlando Magic, 91-79.

Blaylock added five rebounds and five assists as the Hawks posted their second straight win following a season-high four-game losing streak. The Hawks improved to 37-5 over the last three seasons when both starting guards score at least 20 points.

"I just felt good, some shots, they just fell for me tonight," Blaylock said. "Thirty is just another number. That team is an excellent team. I think we really stepped it up and faced the challenge."

Smith was activated from the injured list before the game after missing eight games with a sprained left knee.

"We just both played well, he (Blaylock) hit his shots and it freed up everybody," Smith said. "We both played off of each other. We held them to 38 percent and 79 points. We're trying to get the league low on defense."

Penny Hardaway had 16 points and seven rebounds and Darrell Armstrong added 15 points and seven assists for Orlando, which has dropped its last two contests and has a two-game lead over second-place Miami in the Atlantic Division.

"Basically, we were completely outplayed," said Orlando coach Chuck Daly. "They were really sharp and we looked very sluggish. We struggled offensively. Give them credit, they played very, very good defense and they were teriffic offensively. Mookie was on fire, Smith got on fire in the first half and we had a hard time making up ground on defense."

Chris Crawford scored 15 points in 29 minutes before fouling out and Dikembe Mutombo grabbed 13 rebounds for Atlanta, which split the four-game season series with Orlando.

Blaylock had 13 points in a 23-7 first-quarter run that ended with his 3-pointer from the left sideline for a 27-19 advantage with 2:26 to go.

The Hawks shot 59 percent (13-for-22) in the opening period and held a 31-26 lead.

Orlando closed within 31-30 when B.J. Armstrong made a 20-footer with 8:11 left in the second. But the Magic got no closer as Blaylock answered with a 17-footer 23 seconds later to trigger a 12-3 burst. Grant Long had eight of his 12 points during the run, capping it with a 13-footer for a 43-33 lead with 4:24 to go before halftime.

Atlanta closed the third quarter with a 14-4 surge and took its biggest lead, 75-56, on Blaylock's layup with 8.5 seconds left. Smith had eight points in the run and Blaylock six.
