Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Doug Christie missed a layup with one second left in overtime as the Cleveland Cavaliers held on for a wild 91-90 victory over the desperate Toronto Raptors, who suffered their sixth straight loss.

Christie took a pass from Charles Oakley following a steal and drove hard into the lane, but his layup rolled in and out. Cleveland's Wesley Person tied up Kevin Willis on the rebound as time ran out.

Oakley had intercepted a pass from Person, but Christie could not convert at the other end.

"Oakley made a great play and the kid caught the ball, but he's not a wide receiver and he didn't know how far under the basket he was," Toronto coach Butch Carter said.

Cleveland recorded its third straight win and climbed into a tie with Philadelphia for seventh place in the Eastern Conference. The Cavaliers and 76ers jumped a half game ahead of New York, which lost at Detroit.

"I am happy with the guys sustaining," Cleveland coach Mike Fratello said. "Toronto really manhandled us the last time. We're all fighting for that last playoff spot. We needed a little bit of luck down the stretch."

The loss dealt a blow to Toronto's fading playoff as the Raptors dropped 2 1/2 games behind Cleveland.

Christie had 22 points and rookie Vince Carter overcame the flu to contribute 17 for the Raptors, who slipped two games under .500 at 18-20.

"I played through it and tried not to think about it, so I wouldn't get tired," Vince Carter said.

"We've got enough time and we're playing the same teams over and over again," Toronto guard Dee Brown added. "We've just got to get ourselves out of a hole and not worry about everybody else."

Shawn Kemp scored 23 points and Mitchell Butler added 14 for the Cavaliers, who squandered a 13-point third-quarter lead.

"We knew they'd come out and play harder in the second half," Fratello said. "We hadn't seen their best yet."

Cleveland took an 85-79 lead on Brevin Knight's jumper with 3:58 left in the fourth quarter, but did not score again in regulation.

Vice Carter hit a jumper and Brown drilled a 3-pointer, pulling the Raptors within 85-84 with 1:05 remaining. It was the first basket of the game for Brown, who leads the NBA with 97 3-pointers.

"We dug ourselves a hole when we didn't get things down defensively," Butch Carter said. "With Cleveland, you know it will be a two- or three-possession game, and that's what happened. The guys fought back the whole way, but we missed some free throws we probably shouldn't have."

Vince Carter squandered a chance to put the Raptors ahead by making only 1-of-2 from the line with 28 seconds remaining.

After Knight missed a jumper for Cleveland, Toronto had a chance to win but Carter's layup spun out with just over a second remaining.

Cleveland never trailed in overtime as Butler and Kemp made baskets to give the Cavs an 89-85 lead with 3:50 left.

"It's good for us to get the win because we've been struggling a little bit on the road," Kemp said. "It's playoff time and we're challenging ourselves to move up a spot and get into the playoffs."

Like the final minutes of regulation, the Cavs could not put away the game as Toronto pulled within 89-88 on Wallace's jumper with 1:06 to play.

Person's jump shot made it 91-88 with 11 seconds left before Vince Carter again pulled the Raptors within one with 2.4 seconds to play. The Cavaliers survived the final possession and did not wait around to celebrate.

"It was a hard-fought battle," Butler said. "It came down to one last play and we were able to get it to fall our way. The horn sounded and we got out of there."
