Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Things just keep getting worse for the Chicago Bulls.

Rod Strickland scored all of his 13 points in the first half as the Washington Wizards came up with the best defensive performance in their history, an 87-70 victory over the Bulls, who will miss the playoffs for the first time since the 1983-84 season.

The Wizards dominated from the start, scoring the first 11 points and building an insurmountable 34-11 advantage after the first quarter. Washington led by as many as 28 points in the second half.

The Wizards' previous best defensive effort came in an 84-73 victory over Orlando on March 31.

Strickland also handed out 13 assists and Otis Thorpe had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Washington, which has recovered to win three of its last four following a season-high five-game losing streak.

"The easiest thing to do is to relax coming after the way we played on Wednesday," said Washington interim coach Jim Brovelli, whose team was coming off an overtime victory over New York. "We didn't do that tonight. We kept the aggessiveness up all game. We never let them back in it."

Toni Kukoc scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Bulls, who officially were eliminated from postseason contention and matched a season high with their seventh straight loss. Chicago also has dropped seven consecutive road games since a 95-92 overtime win at Boston on March 21.

At 10-30, the Bulls have the NBA's third-worst record, better only than Vancouver and the Los Angeles Clippers.

"Offensively, we were not even here tonight," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "It was very disappointing. I really can't point to anything."

Strickland's quickness proved to be the Bulls' undoing, particularly in the first quarter. He scored seven points and handed out eight assists in the period, helping the Wizards to 34-11 cushion.

Washington held the Bulls to only five baskets and 23 percent shooting (5-of-22) in the first quarter.

The closest the Bulls got in the second was 42-25 after Randy Brown sank a 17-footer. Washington held a commanding 48-30 advantage at halftime.

The Wizards were never threatened in the second half and took their biggest lead with 9:03 remaining at 79-51 after Jeff McGinnis converted a driving layup.

Mitch Richmond added 12 points and Ben Wallace had a career-high 15 rebounds for Washington.

"It was good to come out and get a victory," Richmond said. "We haven't had a convincing win like that all year. We were very aggressive tonight."

The Wizards shot 45 percent (37-of-83) while holding Chicago to a 34 percent (29-of-86 from the floor.
