Game StoryOAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Clippers no longer own the worst record in the NBA.
Rookie Tyrone Nesby scored 16 points as the Clippers went without a field goal for more than 5 1/2 minutes in the fourth quarter but survived with an 86-83 victory that damaged the playoff hopes of the Golden State Warriors.
Los Angeles took a 73-70 lead with 6:21 remaining after Lamond Murray's tip-in. But they did not have another field goal until Sherman Douglas' driving layup with 47 seconds left snapped a 78-78 tie and put the Clippers ahead for good.
"I think on four if not five of Sherman's baskets he slipped and got around a trap and people didn't help," Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "That last one was inexcusable and that last one was a slow developing play. I don't fault our effort. I think we were tired."
Los Angeles (7-32) has won four of its last six games to move one-half game in front of Vancouver for the worst mark in the league.
"It's nice to see them getting rewarded for their effort," commented Los Angeles coach Chris Ford about his team's play. "With all the adversity we had early, they continued to work hard in practice and come out everyday and do the job."
Rookie Antawn Jamison scored 17 points and Jason Caffey had 14 and 16 rebounds for the Warriors, who had a three-game winning streak stopped. Golden State fell to 10th in the Western Conference, 1 1/2 games behind Seattle for the final playoff berth.
After Murray's tip put the Clippers ahead by three, Jamison made two free throws and hit a short jumper that put the Warriors ahead 74-73 with 4:43 remaining.
The Clippers scored their next five points from the line and helad a three-point lead until John Starks nailed a 3-pointer, bringing Golden State even at 78-78 with 1:33 left.
Los Angeles went just 3-of-5 from the free throw line in the first three quarters but converted 13-of-14 attempts from the line in the final 12 minutes.
A drving layup by Nesby with 5:25 left in the third quarter gave the Clippers their biggest advantage at 59-48. Nesby made 4-of-10 shots from the floor and also went 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
"It's only been three months but I'm learning," Nesby said. "The guys have been playing hard, doing the things to win a basketball game. They're playing a lot smarter now. I don't know why it took 30 games to realize it."
But Golden State finished the third quarter by scoring 13 of the final 17 points to close to 63-61.
