Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- At the start of the season, the Charlotte Hornets looked like a contender for the NBA draft lottery. Now, they are serious contenders to make the playoffs.

David Wesley scored 19 of his 24 points in the second half as the surging Hornets extended their season-high winning streak to seven games with a 90-82 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in a key Eastern Conference battle.

Charlotte struggled for most of the first half but still held a 36-32 advantage at intermission. Wesley scored nine points in the third quarter as the Hornets nearly matched their total from the first half and took a 68-54 lead heading into the final period.

With a team decimated by injuries early in the season, the Hornets got off to a 1-8 start. They endured the resignation of coach Dave Cowens but the acquisitions of Elden Campbell and Eddie Jones from the Los Angeles Lakers have helped them close to one game of .500 (19-20) and within 1 1/2 games of the Cavaliers for the Eastern Conference's final playoff berth.

Former Cav Bobby Phills added 23 points for Charlotte, which is in the midst of its longest winning streak since reeling off 10 in a row from February 21-March 13, 1998.

"This is my eighth year in the league and I played in Cleveland for six," Phills said. "There is a lot of emotions for me to come back here. Fans are behind me and Cleveland will always be home. Whether I score 23 points or three points, it's always good to get a win at home."

Shawn Kemp scored 23 points and Mitchell Butler added 18 for the Cavaliers, who had their three-game winning streak stopped.

"It was a tough game for us tonight," Kemp said. "We just didn't have it. "That back-to-back and three nights really doesn't bother you that much but that next week, it starts to get to you. Charlotte came out on fire in the third quarter and they did what they had to do. You could tell that they had fresher legs than we did."

The Hornets missed their first 10 shots of the second quarter and trailed 28-21 with 3:31 left in the period after Kemp, who went 9-of-14 from the floor, made a short jumper.

Charles Shackleford sank two free throws before Phills hit a hook shot -- Charlotte's first basket of the period -- with 2:11 before intermission. Rookie Brad Miller scored six of the Hornets' final 11 points in the half, giving them a 36-32 advantage.

Charlotte led at the half despite shooting just 34 percent (13-of-38) to Cleveland's 42 percent (14-of-33).

Phills and Eddie Jones buried 3-pointers to start the second half and fuel a 17-8 surge that gave the Hornets a 53-40 lead with 6 1/2 minutes left in the period. Phills had eight points in the burst.

The Hornets shot an impressive 46 percent (10-of-22) from beyond the arc with Phills and Wesley each hitting four 3-pointers. A 3-pointer by Phills with 9:48 remaining gave the Hornets their biggest lead at 76-56. Cleveland got no closer than the final margin.

"They shot the ball extremely well, particularly from behind the 3-point line with Wesley and Phills," Cleveland coach Mike Fratello said. "When their perimeter game is going like that and they could dribble penetrate like they did, they're a very difficult team."

Chuck Brown scored 16 points and Wesley collected 10 assists as the Hornets won the season series from Cleveland, 2-1.

Cleveland shot 49 percent (32-of-66) while Charlotte finished at 45 percent (32-of-71).
