Game StoryLOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Nick Van Exel scored 34 points, including a 22-foot jumper with 5.5 seconds left that gave the Denver Nuggets their second road win of the season, a 103-101 triumph over the Los Angeles Clippers.
Van Exel held the ball throughout the entire final possession. He was challenged by Troy Hudson, but Van Exel calmly hit the jumper to give Denver a two-point lead.
"Coach (Mike D'Antoni) called the play for me," Van Exel said. "And either I was going to go to the hole, or try to make some space to get my jump shot."
"We wanted him to go 1-on-1," D'Antoni said. "The guys came out in the second half and played with more intensity than normal. It was a very big road win for us."
Without a timeout, the Clippers had to go the length of the floor. They had a chance to win, but Sherman Douglas' running 3-pointer hit the back of the rim as time expired. They tied the game with 27 seconds left when Maurice Taylor, who finished with a career-high 28 points, drove for a layup.
"Nick got hot down the stretch," Taylor said. "He hit shots with a guy or two on him. He was hitting shots you just don't (often) hit in a (close) game."
Douglas and Lamond Murray each added 14 points for Los Angeles while Lorenzen Wright pulled down 14 rebounds.
"Everybody's working hard," Wright said. "Once we started playing well, our confidence grew. I know what we have to do. Everybody's picking up their game, and we're a young team."
It was the second time this season the Nuggets used a last-second shot to defeat the Clippers. Chauncey Billups banked in a runner with 3.9 seconds remaining to give Denver an 82-80 triumph over Los Angeles on March 4.
Danny Fortson had 20 points and 14 rebounds and Antonio McDyess added 18 and 10 before fouling out for the Nuggets, who improved to just 2-20 on the road. Their only other road win was against Vancouver on April 7 and they are 5-73 away from home since February 16, 1997.
Denver went on a 14-5 run to take a 95-93 lead with 3:26 left. Fortson and Van Exel each scored four points during that stretch.
Taylor scored 15 points and Lorenzen Wright grabbed 11 rebounds in the first half as the Clippers opened a 53-49 lead. Fortson scored 16 points, including 10-of-10 from the line.
Los Angeles made four straight shots in a 10-0 spurt in the third quarter, opening a 75-70 lead with 2:58 left. Rookie Tyrone Nesby punctuated the burst with a 3-pointer.
Clippers guard Darrick Martin missed his third straight game due to a strained left knee.
