Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Donyell Marshall came off the bench to score 24 points as the Golden State Warriors inched closer to the final playoff berth in the Western Conference with a 90-85 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Marshall scored five points in an 11-2 surge that started the fourth quarter which put the Warriors ahead 73-66 with 7:50 remaining. Marshall scored 16 points in the second half and finished 9-of-14 from the floor.

"I hit the first two or three shots and Chris Mills and John Starks said, `You need to keep shooting,'" Marshall said. "If they tell me to shoot, I'm going to shoot."

John Starks added 14 points for the Warriors, who moved into a ninth-place tie with Sacramento in the West, one game behind Seattle. Golden State has not been to the playoffs since the 1993-94 season.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 25 points and rookie Felipe Lopez added 17 for Vancouver, which dropped its fifth straight game and 10th in its last 11. At 7-34, the Grizzlies have the worst record in the NBA.

"I think they (the Warriors) play so aggressive on both ends and when you're playing like that, you really have to come up with the same type of effort," Lopez said. "They seemed very hungry. We got close but they worked harder."

Vancouver answered Golden State's run to start the quarter with a 13-7 surge, closing to 80-79 with 60 seconds remaining when Abdur-Rahim sank a pair of foul shots.

Starks, who went 7-of-15 from the floor, made a 19-foot jumper that put the Warriors up by three with 42 seconds left.

"It was a big shot for us. Donyell did a good job of rotating the basketball," Starks said. "Felipe was on me and I pump-faked him and he went for it. I stepped into the shot and I was surprised he recovered so quickly to get up with me. But it still went down."

Tony Massenburg committed a loose-ball foul on the Grizzlies' ensuing possession, giving possession to Golden State. Muggsy Bogues made a pair of free throws that pushed the lead to five with 25 seconds to play.

The Warriors hit 8-of-8 from the line in the final minute and 18-of-21 overall.

Golden State built a 47-39 lead at halftime, but that quickly evaporated in the third quarter.

Abdur-Rahim, who hit 10-of-18 shots, scored nine points in a 22-7 run that gave the Grizzlies their biggest lead of the contest at 61-54 with 4 1/2 minutes left in the period.

Marshall scored 11 of the Warriors' 15 points in the quarter and Golden State trailed 64-62 entering the final period.

Terry Cummings contributed 11 points and nine rebounds for the Warriors, who shot 41 percent (34-of-83) and held a 45-34 edge on the glass. The Grizzlies shot 42 percent (30-of-72).
