Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Paul Silas deserves some full-time attention for the interim job he has done with the Charlotte Hornets.

Veteran sharpshooter Chuck Person came off the bench to drain three crucial 3-pointers down the stretch as the Hornets extended their season-high winning streak to eight games with a 120-113 over the floundering New Jersey Nets, pulling closer in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Silas, who replaced disgruntled Dave Cowens on an interim basis, has catapulted his team into the thick of the postseason hunt.

"Destiny is in our hands," Silas said. "We cannot worry about how other teams play. With the type of teams we played on this trip (Milwaukee, Cleveland and the Nets), and to come away with a sweep -- it is great."

The Hornets have gone 16-9 under his guidance, including their longest win streak since reeling off 10 in a row last season. Charlotte (20-20) is tied with Toronto (20-20) and New York (21-21), just one-half game behind eighth-place Cleveland for the final spot in the East.

"Paul Silas should get Coach of the Month -- Interim Coach of the Month," said New Jersey coach Don Casey, who replaced John Calipari after 20 games. "He won the Interim Bowl tonight."

Nicknamed "The Rifleman" for his 1,185 career 3-pointers, Person was 4-of-5 from long range tonight. He capped a 12-4 run with a shot from beyond the arc with 4:04 to play that gave the Hornets a 106-96 cushion.

"Every night we've had different guys who have stepped up," Person said. "Tonight, it was my turn. The last couple of games I haven't been playing much. I just have to wait for them to call my name."

New Jersey responded with six straight points, but Person made another 3-pointer with 2:05 remaining to rebuild the lead to seven. Person's 24-footer with 50 seconds left made it 114-106 and sealed the victory.

David Wesley had 18 points and 11 assists and Person added 16 points for Charlotte, which improved to 17-1 when Wesley records a double-double.

"Everything is positive on this team right now," Wesley said. "We're getting all the looks that we need. We just have to continue to make shots. We're getting big plays down the stretch."

Bobby Phills scored 23 points and Elden Campbell added 22 for the Hornets, who have won four of the last five meetings from the Nets.

"Coach Silas has been doing a good job, getting everyone confidence," Campbell said. "He won't allow anyone to get down on themselves. He encourages everyone to play aggressively. I've never played for a team where everyone has a green light."

Stephon Marbury had 27 points and 13 assists and Keith Van Horn added 26 points for New Jersey, which had won seven of its last 11 games.

These teams will meet for the final time this season Saturday in Charlotte.

Hornets leading scorer Eddie Jones scored 11 points before leaving in the fourth quarter with an apparent finger injury on his right hand. Chucky Brown scored 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting and continues to fill in admirably for injured forward Derrick Coleman.

Jamie Feick had a career-high 17 points and 15 rebounds and Scott Burrell scored17 points for New Jersey, which fell to 0-13 when allowing 100 or more points.

Kerry Kittles scored 14 points for the Nets, who shot 46 percent (40-of-92) and yielded 22 points off 13 turnovers.

Charlotte shot a sparkling 59 percent (46-of-78) from the floor, including 11-of-21 from 3-point range.

"(Silas') team spreads the floor and causes monster problems in the half-court setting," Casey added. "It was an exciting game for everyone but the head coach that loses."

The contest was a see-saw battle until early in the second quarter when the Hornets took the lead for good with a 13-4 spurt.

With his team holding a 35-34 lead, Person made a layup and a 3-pointer to spark the run and Wesley capped it with a 22-footer with 7:22 remaining that gave the Hornets a 48-38 bulge.

New Jersey pulled within 88-87 on a dunk by Feick with 10:59 to play. Phills responded with back-to-back jumpers to push the lead back to four.

Kittles' dunk with 8:34 to go cut the deficit to 94-92 but that was as close as the Nets would get.

Wesley converted a three-point play and hit a 25-footer to stretch the lead to 100-92. Kittles and Kendall Gill made driving layups around a jumper by Charlotte's Eldridge Recasner before Person hit the first of his trio of 3-pointers down the stretch.
