Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Michael Finley burned his former team with a team season-high 36 points, including a jumper and two free throws in the final 6.5 seconds, as the shorthanded Dallas Mavericks upended the Phoenix Suns, 104-100.

Finley scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, when Dallas overcame a 16-point deficit to halt a nine-game losing streak to Phoenix.

With the game tied 100-100, Finley buried an 18-footer over Cliff Robinson with 6.5 seconds remaining. Erick Strickland picked off former Maverick Jason Kidd's ensuing in-bounds pass and Finley sank the deciding free throws with 2.6 seconds to go.

When asked if this was his team's biggest win of the year, Finley replied, "Yes, because those guys over there don't respect us and we came out and won."

"They thought they were just gonna come out and win," Strickland said. "They try to play with us and joke with us on the court."

Finley, who came within three points of his career high, also grabbed 10 rebounds and atoned for his poor performance in a loss to Phoenix on Friday. The former Sun had just six points and four boards in the 92-85 setback.

"This is the kind of play I thought I'd get from him consistently this year, and we've only seen it a couple of times," said Mavs coach Don Nelson. "He's only had a few dominating games this year."

The Mavericks were without Gary Trent, their second-leading scorer and top rebounder, and starting point guard Steve Nash. Trent sat out with a hamstring injury and Nash has back spasms.

Kidd had 17 points, eight assists and seven rebounds but the Suns blew a chance to tie Minnesota for sixth place in the Western Conference. Phoenix is just 1 1/2 games ahead of Seattle and Sacramento for the final playoff spot and its next four games include two matchups with Utah and one each against Houston and Minnesota.

"This is a tough loss," said Suns coach Danny Ainge. "We had control of the game and we got too comfortable with the lead we had. We felt no matter how we played, we'd still win the game. Their athleticism was too tough for us to match up with."

The Suns, who had their season-high three-game winning streak snapped, made just 4-of-16 (25 percent) from the field in the fourth quarter. Dallas shot 13-of-23 (56.5 percent) over the final 12 minutes.

"We played three great quarters and we didn't finish it," Kidd said. "That's the biggest lesson we learned about this."

A layup by Robinson gave Phoenix an 88-72 lead with 11 minutes to play. The margin remained double digits for the next 3 1/2 minutes, but Finley turned the Mavs in the right direction with a 3-pointer that cut the deficit to 93-83.

After a 12-footer by Strickland, Kidd fed Tom Gugliotta for a dunk that with 7:13 left to make it 95-85. The Suns went without a basket the rest of the way.

Hubert Davis hit a jumper, Finley found Strickland for a 3-pointer and made a driving layup before Shawn Bradley's tip-in pulled Dallas within 95-94. The Suns finally answered as Rex Chapman and Gugliotta each sank two free throws.

Chris Anstey came back with a driving dunk and Davis buried a 21-footer before Finley hit a pull-up jumper that gave Dallas its first lead of the game at 100-99 with 1:40 to go. Danny Manning hit only 1-of-2 free throws for Phoenix before Finley dealt the decisive blows.

"Michael Finley carried us the whole game. We called his number a lot and he really had it going tonight," Nelson added. "This is the best comeback we've had all year. We did it against a team we haven't beaten in quite a while."

Davis scored a season-high 18 points and Strickland had seven of his 11 in the fourth quarter. Rookie Dirk Nowitzki fouled out with 13 and nine rebounds, while Bradley added 10 and 10.

Rookie Pat Garrity scored 10 of his 17 points in the second quarter, helping Phoenix turn a three-point game into a 61-49 lead at the half. A pair of free throws by Manning, who scored 16 points, gave Phoenix its largest lead at 82-64 with 2:41 left in the third quarter and the Suns took an 84-72 advantage into the final 12 minutes.

"This game was a little bit bigger for us and we played that way, although we seemed to be out of it for most of the game," Finley added.

Gugliotta contributed 15 points and 12 rebounds for Phoenix, which fell back to .500 at 21-21.
