Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Steve Smith is back and so is the offense of the Atlanta Hawks.

Smith scored 10 of his 14 points in the third quarter as the Hawks reached triple figures for the first time in a dozen games with a 103-81 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

The Hawks went 11 straight games without breaking 85 points and Smith missed eight with a sprained knee. He returned Friday and scored 20 points in a 91-79 victory over Detroit.

"I felt pretty good," said Smith, who added seven rebounds and five assists. "I'm trying to get some games under my belt before the playoffs. Tonight I was able to pass the pass, draw double-teams and score. My rhythm is getting better. We just wanted to get a win."

"Steve makes us a better team," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "He finds the open man, he's unselfish, he draws double-teams, he can post up or shoot from outside, he doesn't mind giving the ball to other players."

Tonight's total was the first time Atlanta reached triple digits since a 103-99 overtime victory against Philadelphia on March 27 and its first in regulation since a 103-102 win over Indiana on March 24. The Hawks are 8-0 when scoring 100 or more points this season.

Chris Crawford scored a career-high 18 points and Mookie Blaylock added 16 for the Hawks (25-17), who have won three in a row to move within two games of first-place Indiana in the Central Division.

"I'm getting some confidence now," said Crawford, who took a team-high 15 shots. "Having Steve Smith back is very important. We usually only score about 80 points a game and he averages about 20, which is a quarter of our points. When we get the offensive weapons going, it makes a difference."

"He understands the game and he's not intimidated," Wilkens said. "We kept working with him and encouraged him. Sometimes it takes a young player a year or two to get it going."

Rookie Vince Carter scored a quiet 16 points for the Raptors, who picked a bad time to match their worst home loss of the year. Toronto (20-21) has dropped seven of nine since its franchise-record seven-game winning streak and fell one game behind Cleveland in the race for the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

After losing the first meeting between the teams this season, Atlanta has won the last two to improve to 14-1 in the all-time series, including 7-0 in Toronto.

"Steve Smith was very physical tonight," Raptors coach Butch Carter said. "I was really concerned about him tonight because a Toronto game can be close to a homecoming for him, being from Detroit."

A jumper by Tracy McGrady capped a 9-2 spurt that pulled the Raptors within 29-28 with 7:09 left in the second quarter but Toronto managed just five baskets over the next 11 minutes.

During that span, the Hawks put together a 35-15 surge that included five 3-pointers, including three by Blaylock.

Tyrone Corbin had a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight of his 13 points in the 22-11 run that closed the second quarter and gave Atlanta a 51-39 lead. Blaylock made two 3-pointers in the 13-4 burst that started the third quarter.

"We were rotating the ball, getting the open shots and hitting them," Crawford said.

"If we do what we're supposed to, and keep them from making 3-pointers, then we have a chance," Butch Carter said.

A 21-footer by Smith capped the explosion at 64-43 with 8:08 left in the third quarter. He added eight more points in the period, including a tip-in that closed the scoring and gave the Hawks an 83-57 lead.

Atlanta widened the lead to 28 points in the fourth quarter and led by no less than 20 thereafter.

Grant Long had 11 points and a season-high 12 rebounds and Dikembe Mutombo added 10 points for the Hawks, who shot 49 percent (41-of-83) from the field, including 9-of-18 from behind the arc.

McGrady scored 14 points and Doug Christie added 10 for Toronto, which shot 41 percent (31-of-76), including just 3-of-17 from 3-point range.

"We started off lackadaisical and they jumped on us pretty quick," McGrady said. "They had a lot of open shots and they made a lot of shots, which made it hard for us to come back. It was just one of those nights where nothing went right for us."

Crawford got off to a quick start with eight points in the first quarter as Atlanta grabbed a 21-17 lead. Carter kept Toronto close with nine.
