Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Michael Finley had 27 points and 11 assists as the Dallas Mavericks snapped an 11-game losing streak against the Houston Rockets with a surprising 109-95 rout of their intrastate rivals.

Dallas, which had not defeated the Rockets since March 27, 1996, also had lost its last 11 road games overall. The Mavericks won in Houston for the first time since April 11, 1995, snapping a six-game skid at the Compaq Center.

"Break up the Mavericks," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "You can't judge a lot by just one game. All of a sudden we seem to be playing better basketball. To play with the lead the whole game was kind of surprising."

"I think this is the best we've played for 48 minutes," Finley added. "We played consistently throughout the game. On offense, our shots were falling as a result. We had a lot of fun out there tonight."

Gary Trent had 24 points and 10 rebounds and rookie Dirk Nowitzki scored 22 points for Dallas, which used a 15-2 second-quarter spurt to open a 46-32 lead and never looked back.

"This is one of our best games," Trent said. "But there have been games where we played great and still lost. I think tonight we had a great defensive effort. We limited them to one shot, then we'd get the rebound and run out on them. We took advantage of that tonight."

Hakeem Olajuwon collected 27 points and 11 rebounds and Charles Barkley added 16 and 11 for Houston, which had won 12 of its previous 13 home games.

"You have to give Dallas a lot of credit," said Olajuwon. "It's one of those nights where they could do nothing wrong, especially the way they shot the ball. This is definitely a big setback for us."

Barkley climbed over Robert Parish into 13th place on the NBA's all-time scoring list with a basket in the first quarter that gave him 23,335 career points.

"They played terrific tonight," Barkley said. "We obviously did not play well. The way they played tonight, they should be in the playoffs. Michael Finley was the best player on the floor tonight. He, Trent and Nowitzki all played terrific."

Hubert Davis scored 14 points for Dallas, which shot a sparkling 53 percent from the field, including 61 percent (27-of-44) in the first half en route to a 61-49 lead at the break.

Barkley hit a 15-footer with 11:27 remaining in the second quarter to pull the Rockets within 31-30. Davis answered with a 3-pointer and a three-point play to open a seven-point bulge with 10:11 left, sparking the Mavericks' decisive run.

Scottie Pippen had a woeful night, scoring four points on 2-of-8 shooting in 31 minutes for the Rockets, who made 43 percent (36-of-84) from the floor. Houston held a 42-39 edge on the boards but forced only eight turnovers, while yielding 22 points on 12 giveaways.

"I can't figure it out," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "To get that kind of performance with everything we're playing for is baffling to me. They made a lot of easy shots, we never got it going."

Trent made a driving layup and Shawn Bradley, who grabbed 10 rebounds, followed with a thunderous dunk to give Dallas its biggest lead of the night, 107-81, with 2:38 to play.
