Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Keith Van Horn scored 28 points, helping the New Jersey Nets defeat the Chicago Bulls for the first time in more than two years, 99-87.

Jamie Feick pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds and Van Horn added eight for the Nets, whose last win in the series came on March 14, 1997. New Jersey avenged a pair of defeats earlier this season and ended a seven-game losing streak against Chicago as Kerry Kittles had 18 points off the bench and Stephon Marbury contributed 12 and nine assists.

"Kerry (Kittles) certainnly came alive today," said New Jersey coach Don Casey. "It was a good energy game and an important one for us in that we were expected to win the game."

Van Horn was 7-of-14 from the field and made all 14 of his free throw attempts as he scored in double-figures for the 39th time in 40 games.

"It was nice. They really had our number," said Van Horn. "I think we executed both offensively and defensively very well. We took solid shots, we contained on defense, it was a solid all-around game for us."

Chicago never led and could force only two ties, the last one at 4-4 on Keith Booth's layup just over a minute into the game. The Bulls were without leading scorer Toni Kukoc, who separated his left shoulder in Sunday's 79-77 win over Milwaukee.

"This is an improved New Jersey team from the one we saw earlier this season," said Chicago coach Tim Floyd. "I think the acquisition of (Jamie) Feick was a good one for them. Putting (Scott) Burrell in the starting lineup has obviously helped them. I think that (Stephon) Marbury had a very good floor game in terms of seeing the floor, getting the ball in the right guys' hands."

Officially eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday, the Nets had an 11-10 lead with 6:52 left before Van Horn ran off 10 straight points. He made six free throws as New Jersey opened a 21-10 advantage with 3:55 remaining in the first quarter.

Behind 12 points from Van Horn, the Nets had a 24-14 lead after one period as they held Chicago to 33 percent (7-for-21) from the floor. They extended the lead to 50-35 at halftime.

The Bulls cut the deficit to 50-41 with 8:45 left in the third quarter following a layup by Randy Brown. But Van Horn scored 10 points during a 20-6 run over the next five minutes to help New Jersey take a 70-47 lead with 3:24 left.

The Nets led by as many as 26 points twice early in the fourth.

Corey Benjamin scored 12 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter and pulled down seven rebounds for the Bulls, who have lost eight of their last nine games. Mark Bryant added 17 points.

"It just wasn't here today," said Bryant. "I felt like I was trying to be aggressive, but shots just weren't falling tonight."

The Nets tied a team record by making all 23 of their free throw attempts.

"As a foul shooting coach, I am very pleased with our 23-for-23, which I think ties a record," added Casey. "They were certainly shorthanded, but that is what we've been going through all season.
