Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Steve Smith scored 13 of his 26 points in the decisive third quarter as the Atlanta Hawks maintained their hold on fourth place in the Eastern Conference with a 106-94 victory over the Boston Celtics at Alexander Coliseum.

Smith helped Atlanta outscore the Celtics, 30-13, in the third period as the Hawks retained a two-game lead over Philadelphia in the battle for homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Atlanta also closed within two games of first-place Indiana in the Central Division.

"We came out and played well in the second half," Smith said. "We were thinking about our record and are trying to make the Central Division a race. We think we have a chance to move up and pass Indiana."

Trailing 49-43 late in the second quarter, the Hawks took control with a 14-0 run that extended into the third period and cruised to their fourth straight victory.

After pulling within 49-47 at halftime, the Hawks took a 51-49 lead on Dikembe Mutombo's hook with 10:38 left in the third quarter and stretched their advantage to 57-49 on Chris Crawford's 13-footer 3 1/2 minutes later.

"We didn't come out with enthusiasm and intensity," Crawford said. "We let them stick aroud. If we didn't come around and pick it up, we knew we would be in for a loss. At this point in the season, we weren't going to let it happen."

Boston did not score in the second half until rookie Paul Pierce made two free throws to cut the margin to 57-51 with 6:52 remaining in the third period. The Celtics did not get their first basket until Vitaly Potapenko's short baseline jumper 89 seconds later.

Smith capped the Hawks' third-period surge with a 3-pointer that gave them a 77-62 bulge with four seconds remaining. Atlanta opened its biggest lead at 84-65 on Smith's 3-pointer with 8:24 left in the final period.

"At the half, I reminded them why we're here," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We came out and were all about business in the third quarter and that's what we have to do."

Atlanta shot 71 percent (12-of-17) in the third period while holding Boston to only 29 percent (5-of-17). The Celtics also had seven of their 17 turnovers in the quarter.

"We had a shot," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "They took us lightly and then they came out (in the second half) really hard and made it really difficult for us to score. We turned it over too much and didn't get shots."

"We're going out and playing hard, but we aren't playing as smart as we should," Pierce added. "The effort is there, the intensity is there and we're getting the pace that we want, but it's the little things."

Boston closed to 101-94 on Barros' jumper with one minute remaining before Atlanta scored the last five points.

"You can't allow yourself to get complacent or a team to get you complacent," Wilkens added. "I don't think we took them for granted, but I thought we let up after the first few minutes of the game."

Crawford finished with 16 points for the Hawks, who improved to 3-0 since Smith, the club's leading scorer, returned from a sprained knee.

Pierce scored 23 points for Boston, which has dropped three straight and played without injured starters Antoine Walker, Kenny Anderson and Ron Mercer.

"We went into a big offensive drought and that's what turnovers will do, but they turned up the heat and that's a credit to their defense," Pitino said. "I've got no complaints. We're really shorthanded."

Atlanta finished at 53 percent (40-of-76) while holding Boston to 43 percent (35-of-82). The Hawks improved to 20-1 when outshooting their opponent and 22-2 when leading after the third period.

Atlanta has posted back-to-back 100-point games for the first time since the opening two games of the season. The Hawks improved to 9-0 when going over the century mark this year.
