Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Don MacLean scored a season-high 25 points and the Seattle SuperSonics picked up a key win in their fight to make the playoffs, 97-84 over the lowly Vancouver Grizzlies.

Averaging only 7.4 points per game, MacLean scored 16 in the first half, helping the Sonics build a 60-43 cushion. MacLean finished 9-of-20 from the floor and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Gary Payton collected 25 points, seven assists and seven rebounds as Seattle remained tied with Sacramento for the final Western Conference playoff spot.

The Sonics won the season series from Vancouver, 2-1, and improved to 13-2 all-time against the Grizzlies.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim poured in 25 points for Vancouver, which was denied in a bid to win consecutive games for the first time since February. The Grizzlies have dropped 12 of their last 14.

Seattle came out looking like a team fighting for its playoff life. The Sonics opened the contest on 21-10 spurt, capped by Hersey Hawkins' driving layup with 5 1/2 minutes left in the period.

Starting in place of Vin Baker, who is sidelined for at least two weeks with a knee injury, MacLean scored 11 points in the first quarter on 4-of-6 shooting.

"I thought we really came out and rebounded the ball well," MacLean said. "We got out in transition and got a lot of easy buckets in the first half. We were way more aggressive on defense and that translated into a lot more easy hoops for us."

A layup by Payton, who scored 13 points in the first half, gave the Sonics their biggest lead at 55-34 with 3:14 to play before intermission. The Sonics shot 54 percent (20-of-37) in the opening half and opened a 17-point bulge.

"We came out focused and did a really good job on the boards," Payton said. "As long as we keep running and doing a lot of the other things that make us a good team, we'll be all right."

The Grizzlies fought back early in the second half and closed to 64-53 with 8:55 left in the third quarter after Tony Massenburg capped a 10-3 spurt by making 1-of-2 free throws. Massenburg scored seven of his 15 points in the run.

However, the Sonics answered with a 13-5 surge that Payton capped with two free throws that pushed the lead to 77-58 with two minutes left in the third. Payton had a productive night at the free throw line, making 11-of-15 attempts.

Vancouver did close to 81-73 with 7:55 remaining in the fourth quarter after DeJuan Wheat nailed a 3-pointer, but got no closer.

"We came into the second half and made up our minds that this was not the way we were going to finish the season," Massenburg said. "We weren't going to let them get so many easy layups. We turned it up defensively but we had really dug a deep hole for ourselves."

The Sonics shot 43 percent (31-of-73) and held Vancouver to 40 percent (33-of-83).

"We really took care of things ... in the second half we didn't shoot the ball as well and they came at us hard," Seattle coach Paul Westphal said. "They definetely didn't quit, but our defense did a god job of holding them in check."
