Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Steve Smith scored 20 points and capped a key third-quarter run with a 3-pointer as the Atlanta Hawks continued their climb in the Central Division with an 89-78 victory over the Washington Wizards.

After trailing by 10 points at halftime, the fading Wizards fought within 54-51 when Ben Wallace connected on the second of two free throws with 7:11 left in the third quarter. But Chris Crawford drove for a layup, Dikembe Mutombo made a five-foot jumper and Smith's 3-pointer gave the Hawks a 61-51 lead with 5:50 remaining in the period.

"We're playing good, we're getting in good positioning," said Smith. "We are a lot bigger than they are. They had to foul and double-team Dikembe (Mutombo) all night. That left me open. Our goal right now is to just keep this high and get ready for the playoffs."

Mookie Blaylock netted 17 points while dishing out 10 assists for the Hawks, who moved within 1 1/2 games of idle Indiana in the race for the Central Division title and the second seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Mitch Richmond scored 19 points and Wallace added 12 and 12 rebounds for the Wizards, who have dropped four in a row and at 16-27 are a season-worst 11 games below .500.

"You can't pick out one specific thing we did wrong," Wallace said. "Turnovers in key situations definitely hurt us. They just outplayed us. They will be tough to contend with, whoever they play in the playoffs."

Rod Strickland's jumper with 3:37 left in the second quarter brought Washington within 41-37 and it appeared the teams would head to the locker room in a tight game. But Tyrone Corbin made a jumper, Blaylock made a 3-pointer and a free throw and Crawford's layup gave the Hawks a 49-37 advantage.

Mutombo made the second of two free throws at the 8:47 mark of the third quarter, giving Atlanta a 54-46 lead before Wallace took over. He threw down consecutive dunks 58 seconds apart and was fouled by Grant Long with just over seven minutes left in the quarter. Wallace connected on the second free throw to make it a three-point game.

The Hawks built a 15-point bulge early in the fourth quarter before watching the Wizards crawl back and make it an 84-78 contest with 1:07 to play. But Atlanta went 5-of-6 from the foul line in the final 53 seconds to seal the victory.

"Everything came together tonight," Long said. "We played as a team. If we can keep this consistency up, then we're going to go all the way."

Atlanta dominated from the foul line, connecting on 27-of-37 shots. The Wizards went to the line only 15 times, making 10.

"Overall, I think it wasn't a bad game," said Wizards interim coach Jim Brovelli. "We outshot them. But the free throws killed us. Everytime we made a run, we would rush it and they would take it."

Corbin and Long scored 15 points apiece and Mutombo had 11 and 14 rebounds for Atlanta, which shot 41 percent (30-of-73) and held a 46-43 advantage on the boards. Corbin and Long combined for 15 rebounds.

"I got double-teamed a lot," Mutombo said. "They don't have a big man, so that's what they have to do. We held them off pretty good all game. We felt pretty comfortable when we got up to 15."

Strickland had 10 points and 11 assists and Calbert Cheaney also scored 10 points for the Wizards, who connected on 41 percent (34-of-83) of their field goals and missed all six of their 3-point attempts.

The Hawks played without forward Alan Henderson, who is sidelined with a bruised tailbone.
