Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Michael Finley scored five of his 28 points during a 15-0 fourth-quarter run as the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Chicago Bulls, 101-93, in a battle of teams playing out the string.

Finley tied it, 85-85, on a three-point play with 5:39 left and added a driving layup over two minutes later, giving Dallas a 91-85 lead.

"Bottom line is that Finley would not let us lose," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "He was terrific and (Erick Strickland) was terrific off the bench."

Strickland scored 11 of his season-high 20 points in the fourth quarter and Shawn Bradley chipped in 14, 17 boards and six blocks before fouling out.

"Bradley was magnificent, and when he fouled out, I was concerned after that," Nelson said. "But everything worked out."

Finley shot 11-of-18 from the floor and added a season-high 11 rebounds without sitting down.

"He brought intensity and energy into the game," Bradley said of his teammate. "When he was on the floor, both when I was on and off the court, I feed off that energy and I know other people feed off that."

Hubert Davis started the decisive run with a jumper at 6:38, getting the Mavericks within 85-80, and Bradley capped it with a follow shot, giving Dallas a 93-85 advantage with two minutes left.

The Bulls shot a respectable 44 percent (32-of-73) from the field but resembled the worst team in the Eastern Conference duuring Dallas' burst, missing all six of their shots and committing four of their seven turnovers.

"It's the best we've taken care of the basketball in quite a while," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "We really didn't beat ourselves in terms of turnovers."

Dallas snapped a two-game skid and claimed its fifth win in nine games but is still 11th in the West at 16-29.

"They are playing very well right now," Floyd said. "They obviously gained some confidence over the last 10 days and it showed late in the game."

Toni Kukoc totaled 26 points, seven rebounds and five assists and Cory Carr, a rookie from Texas Tech, had a season-high 18 points for Chicago, which has lost four in a row, 11 of 13 and has the worst record in the East at 12-34.

"I would give it all back if we could win the ballgame," Carr said of his performance.

Kornel David added 17 points for the Bulls, who used a 42-15 run to grab their biggest lead, 63-52, with 6:24 left in the third quarter.

"We seemed to not be playing any defense," Strickland said. "We looked into each other and (said), `We got to turn it up.' We started to make the good passes and get some open looks. We got back into the game and just finished strong. It is a game of spurts."
