Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Grant Hill scored 10 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter as the Detroit Pistons rallied from a 16-point deficit for a 92-85 victory over the Boston Celtics.

Hill's jumper put Detroit ahead with three minutes remaining, 82-80, giving the Pistons' first lead since early in the first quarter. Jerome Williams added a layup and Jud Buechler hit a 3-pointer, extending the advantage to 87-80 with 1:34 left and capping a 30-7 run.

Williams finished with 21 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for the Pistons, who swept the season series from Boston for only the second in the 50-year history of the rivalry. Detroit went 4-0 against the Celtics in 1996-97.

"When we were down that much late in the third, some of us may have been thinking about our injuries, how banged up we were," Hill said. "But we really got a big shot in the arm from Jud off the bench and we turned up the intensity big-time on defense."

Buechler contributed eight points in 17 minutes.

The Pistons, who held Boston scoreless for a six-minute stretch bridging the third and fourth quarters, also tied Milwaukee for sixth place in the Eastern Conference and maintained a two-game edge over ninth-place Charlotte.

Detroit coach Alvin Gentry admitted he was not sure his team could come back.

"When you're down 16 points and you're telling your team to hang close, give yourself a chance, it's more hoping than anything else," he admitted. "We knew it would be really tough, very difficult to overcome that deficit. They just stopped making their open shots and we got our transition points off their turnovers."

Boston pulled within 89-85 on a foul shot by Dana Barros with 32 seconds remaining before the Pistons hit 3-of-4 from the line to clinch the win.

"We won the game, that's all I can say that's good about this one," said Williams, who also had a career-best seven steals. "It certainly was ugly, but we never quit. We never stopped playing defense and in the end, we were rewarded for it."

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Celtics, who were coming off consecutive 29-point victories over Chicago and Washington.

For awhile, it appeared Boston could be headed for another lopsided win. But the Celtics managed only 12 points in the final period. They also committed 26 turnovers that the Pistons converted into 34 points. It was one shy of Boston's season high, set against Cleveland on February 6.

Boston attempted 28 3-pointers, making only 10, while the Pistons were 2-of-9 from beyond the arc.

"I wouldn't say we took too many 3-pointers," said Boston rookie Paul Pierce, who had 21 points. "The looks were there. We hit them early, we just didn't hit them down the stretch."

Boston opened a 73-57 lead on a follow shot by Walter McCarty with 1:07 remaining in the third period, but the Pistons ripped off the next 15 points, closing to 73-72 on Hill's layup with 7:34 to play.

Pierce ended the drought, hitting a 3-pointer to give the Celtics a 76-72 lead with 6:57 remaining.

"We didn't hit our open shots," said McCarty, who had 17 points and 11 rebounds. "We played hard, we just didn't play well down the stretch."

"I can say this for Walter, he played hard again. But we had too many turnovers, too many mistakes," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "That can't keep happening."

Pierce's third 3-pointer of the second quarter gave the Celtics a 45-30 lead with 2:53 remaining before halftime.

After trailing 47-38 at the intermission, Detroit closed to 60-55 on Williams' two free throws with 3:30 remaining in the third period. Boston ripped off a 13-2 run to take their biggest lead of the game.

Lindsey Hunter added 13 points for the Pistons, who shot 48 percent (35-of-73) from the field en route to their second straight road win. Detroit was coming off Sunday's 91-83 victory at Toronto.

Tony Battie grabbed 13 rebounds for the Celtics, who shot just 41 percent (30-of-73). Ron Mercer added 12 points on 4-of-16 shooting.
