Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Gary Trent scored 20 points to lead five players in double figures as the Dallas Mavericks posted an 84-75 victory over the league-worst Vancouver Grizzlies.

Dallas, which led throughout the first three quarters, fell behind 64-63 on a slam by Michael Smith with 10:12 to play. But the Mavericks outscored Vancouver, 21-11, the rest of the way for their fourth victory in six games.

"I was happy," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "All five starters were in double figures. We were distributing the ball real well. We did a great job at that. The game plan was solid and the guys carried it out."

Trent, who was 7-of-14 from the field and 6-of-9 from the foul line, grabbed eight rebounds. His free throw with 48 seconds left capped a decisive 5-0 spurt and gave the Mavericks an 81-72 cushion.

"It's too bad the season is coming to an end too soon," Trent said. "I'm going to try to improve over the summer."

Michael Finley scored 15 points and Shawn Bradley added 10 and 12 rebounds before he was ejected with less than a minute to play after striking Smith with an inadvertant elbow.

"The game was kind of lackadaisical," said Finley. "Neither team had any energy. It was almost in slow motion. Luckily for us, we got the win. We have a lot of confidence going into the fourth quarter. We know that when the fourth quarter comes around, that's our time to win the ballgame."

Rookie Mike Bibby scored 22 points and Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 16 for Vancouver, which has lost nine of its last 10 games and slipped 1 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Clippers in the race to stay out of the NBA cellar.

"We had a good chance of winning at the end," Bibby said. "We just have to put this game behind us and look to the next. We need to play hard and keep our confidence level high. We need to play hard all the time regardless of if we win or lose."

Hubert Davis collected 12 points and rookie Dirk Nowitzki had 11 for Dallas, which forced 23 turnovers.

The Mavericks improved to 14-10 at Reunion Arena, clinching their first winning record at home since the 1990-91 season, when they were 30-11.

"Homecourt advantage is important, not only during the playoffs but in the regular season as well," added Finley. "When teams come in to our place, it's up to us to defend our territory."

Chris Anstey and Erick Strickland scored eight points apiece off the bench for the Mavericks, who shot 43 percent (32-of-74) and were 19-of-30 at the line.

Trent, a 62 percent free-throw shooter, made all six of his foul shots down the stretch, including a pair after a technical was called on Smith following the altercation with Bradley in the final minute.

"We needed (the free throws) badly," Trent added. "It was important to make them. It was important to me that coach designated me for the free throws when Shawn was ejected. We got a win."

Abdur-Rahim was 3-of-10 from the field and committed four turnovers for Vancouver, which shot 36 percent (27-of-76) and held a 52-41 advantage on the boards.

"Our game plan was to take Abdur-Rahim out of the game and double-team on him," Nelson added.

Finley had a career-high six steals for Dallas, which collected a team season-high 14.
