Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Playing the NBA's top two teams on consecutive nights took their toll on the Seattle SuperSonics.

Damon Stoudamire scored 31 points as the Portland Trail Blazers came up with their most lopsided win against the Sonics, 119-84, to gain a split of their four-game season series.

Stoudamire's total was a season high for any Blazer and gave Portland its third straight win and fifth in six outings. Walt Williams netted 20 points, while Arvydas Sabonis recorded his 15th double-double of the season with 16 and 11 rebounds.

"We came out and attacked them early," Stoudamire said. "My teammates did a good job of feeding me, but I did a good job of pushing the ball all night."

The 119 points were the most for Portland since a 121-96 rout of Boston on February 22, 1998. The Blazers also outrebounded the Sonics, 51-35.

The Sonics, who suffered a 123-89 pasting by the Blazers on January 3, 1985, could not make it two straight wins after defeating Utah on Tuesday, 90-85.

The Blazers broke open the game with a 13-2 spurt in the third quarter that provided a 68-49 lead with 8:14 to play. Stoudamire and Williams scored four points apiece.

Stoudamire took control as the period continued. He netted nine points during a 16-3 burst that extended the lead to 95-60 with 52 seconds left. Stoudamire finished the quarter with 17 points as the Blazers cruised into the final period with a 97-64 lead.

"He made great decisons in the open court," Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy said of Stoudamire. "He put a lot of pressure on their defense, broke it down and got a lot of people involved. That's the mix we're looking for."

The 44 points were the most in the third quarter for Portland this season and one short of a franchise high.

"It was the best third quarter of the year," Dunleavy added. "I told them at halftime that we had to come out, take control and apply defensive pressure. We have a quiet confidence right now."

Portland, which already clinched the Pacific Division title, improved to 34-11 and took a half-game lead over Utah for the best record in the league.

Detlef Schrempf and Dale Ellis each scored 13 points for Seattle, which is one game behind Minnesota and Sacramento for the final Western Conference playoff spot.

"What I told the guys was that if you lose by one or 100, it still counts as a loss," Sonics coach Paul Westphal said. "People can look at the final score and draw what conclusions they want. It we get there (the playoffs) and we're healty, we feel we can play with anybody."

Portland used a 15-2 tear in the second quarter to open a 47-36 lead. Stoudamire finished the half with 14 points, enabling the Blazers to go into intermission ahead, 53-45.
