Game StorySACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Even with Chris Webber sidelined, the Sacramento Kings are moving closer to their first playoff berth in four years.
Vernon Maxwell scored all 16 of his points in the pivotal second quarter as the Kings overcame the absence of Webber and defeated the lowly Los Angeles Clippers, 103-81, for their seventh win in eight games.
Maxwell's effort in the second period helped the Kings to their biggest quarter of the season as they outscored Los Angeles, 41-27, and opened a 66-46 cushion at halftime. The points in the half also were a season high.
Webber, who leads Sacramento in scoring and rebounding, has missed the last three games with a lower back strain.
Tariq Abdul-Wahad scored a season-high 19 points for the Kings, who are seventh in the Western Conference, 1 1/2 games in front of ninth-place Seattle. Sacramento has made the playoffs just once since 1986.
"Every game right now is a key game," Abdul-Wahad said. "I really feel the electricity growing within the city over this team. People are aware that something is happening here."
Scot Pollard, filling in for Webber, added a career-high 16 points and 11 rebounds for Sacramento, which has three games remaining, two at home.
"Well, I get paid to play basketball so when I get my opportunity, I have to do my job," commented Pollard. "I will not guarantee that I will score a lot every night, but when I do get my opportunity I try to get rebounds, make screens and do the little dirty work to help the team."
Troy Hudson collected career highs of 20 points and 14 assists for the Clippers, who have second-worst record in the NBA, 1 1/2 games ahead of Vancouver.
The Kings held a 31-23 advantage with 10:40 left in the second quarter when they took control of the contest. Maxwell scored eight points in a 15-4 surge and capped the run with 25-footer that pushed the lead to 46-27 with 7:22 left before halftime.
Maxwell hit 4-of-5 shots from beyond the arc and was 5-of-7 from the floor overall in the second quarter. The Kings shot 65 percent (13-of-20) in the second period and 50 percent (25-of-50) in the half.
"I felt like we were sluiggish on `O' tonight so I just told myself it's down to the last few weeks of the season, so I have to go out and be that spark," Maxwell said. "I just wanted to come in with intensity today and I think I did a good job of that tonight."
Sacramento increased its 20-point halftime lead and took its biggest lead of the game at 89-62 with 3:25 left in third quarter after Abdul-Wahad made a pair of free throws, capping a 14-3 spurt.
Rookie Predrag Stojakovic added 15 points for Sacramento, which shot a lowly 25 percent (11-of-41) in the second half and finished at 40 percent (36-of-90).
The Clippers actually tried to fight back and answered Sacramento's run with a 12-0 surge of their own to close to 89-74 with 11:16 remaining. But they got no closer the rest of the way.
Los Angeles shot 36 percent (30-of-83) and was outrebounded, 58-48.
"Sacramento came out really fired up and took it to us," Los Angeles coach Chris Ford said. "Our defensive intensity was lacking the first half and they just had their way with us. They killed us in the pick-and-roll and also with the rebounding and second-chance opportunities. Without Webber those guys are finding ways to pick it up and they're getting a lot of help from their second unit."
