Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Hornets held the Chicago Bulls scoreless for the final two minutes and kept their playoffs hopes alive with a 92-88 victory.

With three games remaining, the Hornets (24-23) are one game behind the idle the New York Knicks (25-22) for the eighth and final spot in the Eastern Conference. Charlotte must finish ahead of New York after losing the season series.

"I wasn't surprised that we came out the way we did tonight," said Charlotte interim coach Paul Silas. "We were physically fatigued from playing so many games in such a short span. My main guys came through at the end."

Ron Harper scored the Bulls' last points on a 16-foot jumper, giving his team an 88-87 edge with 1:57 left. The Hornets took the lead for good 16 seconds later on a five-footer by Elden Campbell.

Bobby Phills tipped in a miss to boost the lead to 91-88 with 34 seconds remaining. Toni Kukoc missed a 3-pointer with 17 seconds to play and Phills added a foul shot to close the scoring.

"Bobby Phills got a nice tip and it went into the basket," said Chicago center Dickey Simpkins. "It's just one of those things. We came out well defensively and with intensity like we were fighting for the playoffs. We played hard and aggressively."

The Hornets jumped out to a 30-24 lead after the first quarter. Chicago opened an 18-13 lead with 4:12 left on Harper's jumper but the Hornets closed the quarter with a 17-6 burst. Campbell led the run with six points.

Charlotte pushed the lead as high as nine points in the second quarter and settled for a 54-48 halftime lead.

Chicago cut the deficit to two points three times in the third quarter, the last time as it scored five consecutive points at the end of the quarter. Corey Benjamin hit a 15-foot jumper with 29 seconds remaining and, after a steal by Rusty LaRue, Kukoc buried a 3-pointer.

Campbell and David Wesley paced the Hornets with 19 points apiece while Phills added 11. Campbell also grabbed 10 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season.

"We have to win out and get some help," said Wesley. "Maybe we were a little fatigued tonight, but we found a way to win. It wasn't pretty, but we got the job done. They're trying to win all the games they can. We have to take care of what we have to do."

Kukoc led the Bulls with 23 points and nine rebounds. Simpkins added 16 points and Brent Barry scored 11 off the bench for Chicago, which fell to 4-21 on the road.

"We have not executed in the final stretch the whole season," said Kukoc. "It happened again tonight. We couldn't get anything good down the stretch. We missed a lot of free throws and those are important in a close game."

Charlotte won the season series, 2-1, winning twice at home.
