Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Kerry Kittles scored 12 of his season-high 31 points in the fourth quarter, leading the New Jersey Nets to a meaningless 102-91 victory over the Washington Wizards.

Stephon Marbury had 32 points and nine assists for New Jersey (15-33), which snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 12-16 under interim coach Don Casey.

Mitch Richmond scored 34 points and Rod Strickland added 27 for the Wizards, who have lost eight of their last nine games. Washington (17-31) dropped to 4-12 under interim coach Jim Brovelli.

"It was a showcase for the guards tonight," Brovelli said. "We're missing three front-line guys and they're missing some front-line guys. The strength of both teams is the guards."

Both teams are headed for the NBA draft lottery, although the Nets do not own a first-round pick. Each team has just one playoff berth in the last five seasons.

It was the penultimate home game for the Nets, who endured a very disappointing season. After the final buzzer, Kittles threw his jersey in the stands and Kendall Gill thanked the fans via the public address system.

"I got a degree in communications. You think I'm not gonna use it?" Gill said.

"I just wanted to thank the fans for coming out and show them that we appreciate them coming to our games and rooting for us," Kittles said.

Kittles scored the first eight points of the final period on two free throws and two 3-pointers, giving the Nets an 83-64 lead with 10:12 remaining.

"He played great," Marbury said. "He played with a great deal of confidence. Me and him talked after the Orlando game. I told him, `You have to come out and play with the fight you played with when you were a rookie.' He has a lot to prove now because people are gunning for him now. You have to come out and attack every night."

Washington battled within 94-88 on a basket by Strickland, but Gill made a jumper and Kittles sank two free throws for a 10-point lead with 1:01 remaining.

Mark Hendrickson scored 14 points and Gill added 11 for the Nets, who shot 40.5 percent (34-of-84) from the field and made 28-of-33 free throws. Marbury was 15-of-15 from the line.

Jamie Feick grabbed 14 rebounds and Hendrickson pulled down a season-high 10 as New Jersey held a 48-43 edge on the boards. Ben Wallace collected nine rebounds and a season-high six blocks for Washington.

Kittles, whose previous season high was 21 points, scored 11 in the first quarter as New Jersey bolted to a 29-21 lead. Marbury scored 13 in the second quarter, helping build the lead to 58-42.

"Kerry has had his ruts," Casey said. "But he's worked his way out. He's hung with it."
