Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Rookie Jason Williams scored nine of his 24 points in the fourth quarter as the surging Sacramento Kings moved closer to a playoff berth with a 111-100 triumph over the Phoenix Suns.

The Kings (25-23) reduce their magic number for clinching a playoff spot in the Western Conference to one. They need a win or a loss by Seattle (23-25) for their first postseason appearance in three years and just their second since moving from Kansas City in 1985. Both teams have two games remaining.

The win also moved Sacramento into a tie for seventh with the idle Minnesota Timberwolves, a half-game behind sixth-place Phoenix (26-23), which clinched a playoff berth Saturday. The Kings do not have the tiebreakler edge over the Timberwolves but do hold the tiebreaker over the Suns, having swept the three-game season series.

"Obviously this was a tremendous win for our club," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "I think our big guys were really able to cause problems for them. They are an explosive offense, much like ours."

Williams scored seven points during a 13-6 run that gave the Kings a 106-94 lead with 1:19 left. They cruised to their eighth win in nine games.

Phoenix committed 20 turnovers which Sacramento turned into 26 points. The Suns shot 32 percent (7-of-22) from the floor in the final quarter.

Vernon Maxwell scored 16 points off the bench and Corliss Williamson added 14 for Sacramento. Playing with a sore back, Chris Webber recorded his 36th double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

"In the first quarter I did not feel good at all, but I felt better as the game progressed," Webber said. "The adrenaline took over and after a while I felt fine."

Tom Gugliotta led the Suns with 21 points while Jason Kidd had 15, 10 assists and nine rebounds, falling just short of his league-leading eighth triple-double.

"At the start of the game (coach Danny Ainge) had already told us that everyone was going to have limited minutes," Kidd said. "Right now the biggest concern is to make sure everybody is healthy and that we are all well rested going into the playoffs."

"We certainly didn't run cuts very hard, but that had been a sore spot for us," Gugliotta said. "So we have got to fix that before the playoffs get started. We got careless with the ball and we didn't execute in half-court (offense)."

Phoenix blitzed Sacramento with a 10-1 run in just over two minutes for a 22-11 lead with 6:28 left in the first quarter. The Kings came back in the opening period with a 13-2 burst led by five points by Williams to climb within 31-29 with 2:11 to play.

The Kings outscored the Suns 30-19 in the second quarter and closed the period with a 9-4 spurt featuring five points from Scot Pollard. Williams scored 13 points in the first half as Sacramento grabbed a 62-55 lead.

A pair of 6-0 spurts in the third quarter allowed Sacramento to take an 83-78 advantage to the final 12 minutes. Williamson scored 10 points in the period.
