Game Story

INGLEWOOD, California (Ticker) -- Shaquille O'Neal had 26 points and 11 rebounds and Glen Rice scored 10 of his 22 points in a pivotal third-quarter run to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to their 16th straight victory over the Dallas Mavericks, 115-102.

Michael Finley's dunk with 26.4 seconds left in the first half gave Dallas a 57-55 lead. But Los Angeles began the third quarter with a 28-6 run. Rice's 3-pointer with 2:51 left in the period put the Lakers ahead 83-63 and their lead never dipped below double figures thereafter.

"Tonight I was definitely in to the flow and a little more active," Rice said. "Guys were looking to set screens for me and get me involved."

"They (the Mavericks) hit a lot of shots, they shot 60 percent in the first half. We just wanted to come out and play a little bit better defense, box out better, and just keep playing hard," said O'Neal, who sat out much of the third quarter with foul trouble. "Then they started missing some shots and a couple of our guys got hot and the momentum turned a different way."

Kobe Bryant added 17 points and a career-high 10 assists for Los Angeles, which owns a one-half game lead over Houston for the fourth seed in the Western Conference and home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

"I was just trying to hit the open man," Bryant said. "The guys were coming and double teaming me and I was just finding the open man. This team is a very dangerous team to do that to. You double on Shaq or myself and we've got a lot of weapons to go to."

The Lakers, who play their last game of the season against Portland at home on Wednesday, own the tiebreaker against the Rockets.

Finley collected 24 points and Erick Strickland contributed 17 and six assists for the Mavericks, who had a four-game winning streak stopped. Dallas also suffered its 17th consecutive loss at the Great Western Forum.

"We absolutely gave ourselves no chance with the third quarter we played," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We needed to continue to play like we did in the first half. We just turned the ball over too much."

The Lakers owned an 18-10 advantage after O'Neal made a jumper with 4:59 left in the first. However, Finley scored 10 points in a 19-7 spurt as Dallas went into the second with a 29-25 lead.

After Samaki Walker's two free throws gave the Mavs a 38-29 advantage, Los Angeles scored 14 of the next 18 points to go ahead, 43-42. But Dallas took a six-point lead on Hubert Davis' running jumper with 2:49 left. O'Neal answered with a three-point play but A.C. Green's basket 20 seconds put the Mavs on top 53-50.

Derek Fisher hit a 3-pointer to tie the game but Shawn Bradley gave Dallas back the lead with an 18-foot jumper. Robert Horry's dunk tied it again before Finley gave the Mavs their last lead with a dunk.

Fisher finished with 10 points and eight assists and Rick Fox chipped in with 11 points for the Lakers, who shot 54.5 percent (42-for-77) from the field. Los Angeles was 7-of-16 from 3-point range and made 83 percent (24-of-29) of their free throws.

Walker scored 15 points, Davis and Bradley added 13 apiece, and Chris Anstey had 10 and seven rebounds for Mavs, who scored 48 points in the paint.

"I thought that the first half was a good half," Walker said. "We didn't match their energy in the second half. They came out and they shot well. I thought that we played pretty good for most of the game. We had some big spurts, and they had some big spurts that we coudn't come back from. They really began to dominate us on the offensive glass and got some easy baskets."
