Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Rod Strickland and Mitch Richmond scored 24 points apiece and the Washington Wizards overcame another strong effort by Stephon Marbury to post a 113-102 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

Otis Thorpe contributed 22 points for Washington, which tied its season high for points and exacted some revenge for Saturday's 102-91 loss at New Jersey.

Marbury, who had 32 points Saturday, totaled 37 in this one, topping 30 for the third consecutive contest.

New Jersey took two of three meetings between the teams this season, but both will be watching when the playoffs begin this weekend.

"It's over with now," Strickland said. "The season is winding down and all I have to look forward to now is a new beginning. This has been rough. I've never been in a sitiuation before where we had no chance of making the playoffs. That's a tough feeling not having anything to play for. It was a meaningless game."

"We're beyond short-handed," Marbury said. "We're playing guys who come off the bench and they're not used to doing that. We have to get everybody back. We have six of our top guys out. I thought we could make the playoffs, then Jayson (Williams) and Keith (Van Horn) went down."

A basket by Marbury with just over three minutes left in the third quarter brought New Jersey within 81-78, but the Wizards used a 13-3 spurt over the final three minutes of the period and the opening moments of the fourth to take control.

Strickland made two free throws and Thorpe connected on a short jumper, pushing the lead to seven points. After Kendal Gill made a free throw for the Nets, Jahidi White's tip-in with 10 seconds left in the period gave Washington an 87-79 lead.

Calbert Cheaney opened the scoring in the fourth with a driving layup and Legler followed with a layup to make it a 12-point contest. Cheaney made one free throw and the Nets came no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Thorpe grabbed 11 rebounds and Ben Wallace had 17 points and nine boards for the Wizards, who shot 56 percent (45-of-81) from the field, including 5-of-13 from 3-point range, and held a 47-39 rebounding advantage.

"We got up and down a little bit tonight," Strickland added. "It felt a little bit like (playing on the) playground again."

Gill had eight points and Jaime Feick 19 rebounds, 10 on the offensive end, for New Jersey, which connected on 40 percent (36-of-89) of its field goals. The Nets committed 17 turnovers leading to 30 points for the Wizards.

"Rod Strickland really took over and got his team involved," Gill said. "We just didn't have enough in the end to pull this one out. I can't wait for next season to come."

New Jersey signed Gheorge Muresan to a contract for the remaining two games earlier in the day but the 7-7 center did not see any action.

"We're not too big on the inside so (Muresan) has a good chance to fit in here," said Nets interim coach Don Casey. "We'll probably move Jayson back to the four (spot next year)."
